Common Causes

If your Ring Battery Doorbell Plus is not connecting to WiFi or is experiencing motion detection problems, one or more of these issues is likely responsible:

  • Weak WiFi signal at the doorbell's mounting location
  • Low or depleted battery — the doorbell needs sufficient charge to maintain a WiFi connection and process motion events
  • Motion sensitivity set too low — the doorbell may not trigger on distant or slow-moving activity
  • Motion zones misconfigured — important areas may be excluded from detection
  • WiFi network change — password update, new router, or ISP change
  • Firmware issue — outdated firmware can cause erratic behavior
  • Environmental factors — extreme temperatures can temporarily affect battery performance and motion detection

Fixing WiFi Connection Issues

Step 1: Check the Battery Level

  1. Open the Ring app and select your Battery Doorbell Plus.
  2. Tap Device Health and check the battery percentage.
  3. If the battery is below 20 percent, remove it and fully recharge it using the included USB-C cable. A depleted battery is one of the most common causes of WiFi disconnections.
  4. Reinsert the charged battery and wait two to three minutes for the doorbell to reconnect.

Step 2: Check WiFi Signal Strength

  1. In the Ring app, go to Device Health and check the RSSI value.
  2. RSSI between -40 and -60 is good. Values weaker than -70 indicate poor signal that causes connection drops.
  3. If the signal is weak, add a WiFi extender or mesh WiFi node near your front door.

Step 3: Power Cycle and Reconnect

  1. Remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, and reinsert it.
  2. If the doorbell still will not connect, open the Ring app and go to Device Health.
  3. Tap Reconnect to WiFi and press the setup button on the doorbell.
  4. Select your 2.4 GHz WiFi network and enter your password. The Battery Doorbell Plus does not support 5 GHz.

Fixing Motion Detection Issues

Step 4: Review Motion Settings

  1. In the Ring app, select your doorbell and tap Motion Settings.
  2. Verify Motion Detection is toggled on. If it is disabled, you will not receive any motion alerts.
  3. Check your Motion Zones. Ensure the areas you want to monitor (walkway, porch, driveway) are included in at least one active zone.
  4. Increase the Motion Sensitivity slider if you are missing events. Start at a medium-high setting and adjust down if you get too many false alerts.

Step 5: Check Motion Scheduling and Modes

  1. Check if a Motion Schedule is active that might be disabling detection during certain hours.
  2. Verify the Ring app's Mode setting. If the mode is set to Disarmed, motion detection may be turned off for this device.
  3. Check Motion Alerts — even if motion is being detected, alerts may be silenced if notifications are disabled.

Step 6: Address Environmental Factors

  • Direct sunlight hitting the motion sensor can cause false triggers or reduce detection accuracy. Consider using the included wedge kit to angle the doorbell slightly.
  • Extreme cold (below 32 degrees Fahrenheit) can reduce battery performance and affect motion detection range.
  • Busy sidewalks or streets in the camera's field of view can overwhelm the motion sensor. Use motion zones to exclude high-traffic areas you do not need to monitor.

When to Contact Ring Support

  • If the doorbell frequently disconnects from WiFi despite strong signal and a full battery, there may be a hardware defect.
  • If motion detection does not work at all despite correct settings, the PIR motion sensor may need replacement.
  • Contact Ring Support through the Ring app or at ring.com/support for warranty assistance.
