The Schlage Encode smart lock connects directly to your WiFi network without requiring a separate hub. However, many users experience difficulty getting the lock to connect or staying connected to WiFi. This guide covers the most common causes and solutions.

Common Causes

  • 5GHz network - The Schlage Encode only works on 2.4GHz WiFi networks
  • Password issues - Special characters or long passwords can prevent connection
  • Dual-band router confusion - The lock may attempt to connect to the wrong band
  • Router compatibility - Some mesh routers have known issues with IoT devices
  • Low battery - Weak batteries can affect WiFi connectivity

How to Fix It

Step 1: Verify 2.4GHz Network

The Schlage Encode does not support 5GHz WiFi. Make sure you are connecting to your 2.4GHz network during setup. If your router combines both bands under one network name, you may need to create a separate 2.4GHz-only network.

Step 2: Check Your WiFi Password

The Schlage Encode has specific password requirements:

  • Maximum 24 characters
  • Some special characters like $ and & are not recognized
  • Spaces in the password will cause connection errors

If your password has any of these issues, either change it or create a guest network with a simpler password for the lock.

Step 3: Factory Reset and Reconnect

Perform a full factory reset:

  1. Remove the battery cover
  2. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds
  3. The lock will beep and the deadbolt will cycle
  4. Delete the lock from the Schlage Home app
  5. Reinstall the app and set up the lock as new

Step 4: Create a Dedicated IoT Network

Many users with mesh routers like Orbi or Eero find that creating a separate 2.4GHz guest network for IoT devices resolves constant disconnection issues. This prevents the router from trying to switch the device between bands.

Step 5: Restart Your Router

Power cycle your router:

  1. Unplug the power cord from your router
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds
  3. Plug the cord back in
  4. Wait for the network to fully restart
  5. Try connecting the lock again

Step 6: Replace Batteries

Install fresh AA alkaline batteries. Low batteries can cause intermittent WiFi disconnections even if the lock still operates manually.

Warranty Information

The Schlage Encode includes a 3-year electronics warranty. If you have tried all troubleshooting steps and the lock still will not maintain a WiFi connection, contact Schlage support for a replacement.
