If your Schlage smart lock keypad isn't responding, won't accept codes, or shows error lights, this guide covers the most common causes and fixes from the community.
Understanding the LED Indicators
Before troubleshooting, know what the lights mean:
- Green checkmark: Correct code accepted, lock will operate
- Solid red X: Incorrect code entered
- Three flashing red Xs: Dead or very low batteries
- Orange flashing light: Lock is in programming mode
- No lights at all: Battery issue or hardware problem
Replace the Batteries First
Battery issues are the most common cause of keypad problems—even when the app shows batteries are fine.
One community member reported: "Even when the app indicates batteries are at 99%, replacing the batteries brought the keypad back to life."
Battery tips:
- Use fresh alkaline AA batteries (4 batteries for most models)
- Don't use rechargeable batteries—voltage is slightly lower
- Don't mix old and new batteries
- Replace all batteries at once
- Clean the battery contacts if corroded
Keypad Doesn't Light Up At All
If nothing happens when you touch the keypad:
- Replace batteries – Even if you think they're good
- Check battery orientation – Make sure + and - are correct
- Check for corrosion – Clean battery contacts with a dry cloth
- Check wire connections – Remove the interior assembly and check that no wires are loose or broken
Check for broken wires:
The cable connecting the exterior keypad to the interior assembly can break, especially after installation. Remove the thumb turn assembly and visually inspect the wires. If a wire is broken, the part needs replacement.
Code Not Being Accepted
If the keypad lights up but your code doesn't work:
Verify you're entering the code correctly:
- Wake the keypad by touching it (wait for lights)
- Enter your code, then press the Schlage button
- Some models: enter code, then press the checkmark or lock icon
- Don't pause too long between digits
Check if the code was deleted:
- If someone did a factory reset, all user codes are erased
- Check the app (if connected) to see programmed codes
- Re-program your code if needed
Maximum code attempts:
After several incorrect attempts, the lock may temporarily disable the keypad. Wait 30-60 seconds and try again.
Re-Program User Codes
If codes aren't working, try re-programming them:
Using the keypad (most models):
- Enter your Programming Code (6-digit code from the sticker inside the battery cover)
- Press the Schlage button
- The keypad should flash orange
- Press 1 to add a new user code
- Enter the new 4-digit user code
- Press the Schlage button
- Green checkmark = code saved successfully
Can't find your Programming Code?
- Check the sticker inside the battery compartment
- Check the original packaging
- Check the User Guide
- If you've lost it and the lock is paired to an app, you can usually manage codes there
Programming Code Not Working
If you can't enter programming mode:
- Make sure you're using the Programming Code (not a User Code)
- The Programming Code is typically 6 digits
- Try entering it more slowly, with deliberate key presses
- Replace batteries before attempting programming
Issues After Connecting to Smart Hub
Some users report keypad issues after connecting to SmartThings, Hubitat, or other hubs:
One user reported: "After connecting a Schlage Connect to SmartThings hub, the Schlage button stops locking the door. This can happen repeatedly even after resetting and reprogramming."
Solutions:
- Exclude the lock from the hub and re-include it
- Update the lock's firmware via the hub if supported
- Ensure the lock isn't too far from the hub (Z-Wave range issues)
- Check for ghost nodes in your Z-Wave network
Factory Reset the Lock
If nothing else works, try a factory reset. Warning: This erases all codes and settings.
Factory reset procedure (most Schlage models):
- Disconnect the battery
- Press and release the Schlage button
- While holding the Schlage button, reconnect the battery
- Keep holding until the lock beeps and the button flashes green
- Release the button
- The lock is now reset to factory defaults
Alternative reset method:
- Press the Schlage button
- Press and hold the small reset button (inside the battery compartment) for 10 seconds
- The lock will beep when reset is complete
After reset, you'll need to re-program your codes and reconnect to any smart home system.
Check Physical Installation
Installation issues can cause keypad problems:
- Thumb turn alignment: Verify the post on the back of the thumb knob is properly seated in the cam on the base plate
- Door alignment: If the door doesn't close properly, the lock may bind
- Deadbolt alignment: The bolt should extend smoothly into the strike plate
- Cable pinching: Make sure the wire cable isn't pinched when assembling
Weather and Temperature
Extreme temperatures can affect keypad function:
- Very cold weather reduces battery voltage temporarily
- Condensation from temperature changes can cause issues
- Direct sun exposure can overheat the electronics
If problems occur in extreme weather, try warming/cooling the lock to normal temperature.
When to Contact Schlage
Contact Schlage support if:
- The keypad never lights up despite new batteries and checking connections
- You suspect a hardware defect
- The lock is under warranty (typically 3 years for electronics)
