Problem Description

Your Shelly Plus 1 Smart Relay is not connecting to WiFi, not appearing in the Shelly app, or not switching connected devices on and off.

Common Causes

  • Incorrect wiring during installation
  • WiFi signal too weak at device location
  • Device in AP mode instead of client mode
  • Router blocking the connection
  • Firmware needs updating

Solutions

1. Check WiFi Connection Mode

  1. Look for a WiFi network named ShellyPlus1-XXXX
  2. If found, device is in AP mode and needs configuration
  3. Connect to that network with your phone
  4. Open browser and go to 192.168.33.1
  5. Configure your WiFi network in settings

2. Verify Wiring

  • Check L (Line) and N (Neutral) connections
  • SW terminal connects to your wall switch
  • O terminal connects to your load (light/device)
  • Ensure all connections are secure and properly stripped

3. Reset the Device

  1. Press and hold the button on the Shelly for 10 seconds
  2. LED will flash and device will restart
  3. Device will enter AP mode (creates its own WiFi)
  4. Connect and reconfigure

4. Check WiFi Signal Strength

  • In Shelly web interface, check WiFi RSSI
  • Signal should be above -70 dBm for reliable operation
  • Consider adding WiFi extender if signal is weak
  • Metal junction boxes can block WiFi significantly

5. Configure in Shelly App

  1. Download Shelly Smart Control app
  2. Create account if needed
  3. Tap + to add device
  4. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled for discovery
  5. Follow setup wizard

6. Update Firmware

  1. Access device web interface
  2. Go to Settings then Firmware
  3. Check for updates and install
  4. Do not disconnect power during update
