Smart fans and air purifiers with WiFi connectivity allow remote control and automation. This guide covers common issues.

Fan Won't Connect

Setup issues:

  • Brand app: Download manufacturer's app
  • 2.4GHz: Most fans only support 2.4GHz WiFi
  • Pairing mode: Hold button until WiFi indicator blinks
  • Reset: Factory reset and try again
  • Distance: Set up near router initially

Remote Control Issues

When remote or app doesn't control fan:

  • IR remote: Needs line of sight for IR remotes
  • WiFi remote: App needs WiFi connection to fan
  • Battery: Replace remote batteries
  • Re-pair: Re-pair remote if not working

Speed and Oscillation

Control feature issues:

  • Speed levels: Check available speed settings
  • Oscillation: Enable/disable in app
  • Timer: Set auto-off timers
  • Natural mode: Varies speed for natural feel

Ceiling Fan Integration

For smart ceiling fans:

  • WiFi module: Some need separate WiFi module
  • Bond Bridge: Can add smarts to RF-controlled fans
  • Light control: Fan and light often separate
  • Direction: Reverse for winter/summer

Smart Home Integration

Platform connections:

  • Alexa: Voice control for speed and on/off
  • Google Home: Basic controls supported
  • HomeKit: Limited fan support in HomeKit
  • Home Assistant: Varies by brand and model

Automations

Common fan automations:

  • Temperature based: Turn on when hot
  • Schedule: Run during sleeping hours
  • Presence: Turn off when room empty
  • Air quality: For purifiers, run when air quality poor
