Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is a cutting-edge Thread-based motion detector that represents Aqara's commitment to the Matter ecosystem. Unlike its Zigbee-based predecessors, the P2 uses Thread protocol, enabling direct connection to Matter controllers and Thread Border Routers without requiring an Aqara-specific hub. This makes it one of the most versatile motion sensors available, working seamlessly with Apple HomePod, Apple TV, Samsung SmartThings Station, Amazon Echo devices with Thread support, Google Nest Hub, and many other Thread Border Routers.

The P2 features an expansive 170-degree horizontal detection angle with 45-degree vertical coverage and a detection range of up to 7 meters, covering approximately 50 square meters when ceiling-mounted or 35 square meters when wall-mounted. The built-in light sensor provides illumination monitoring with a detection range of 0 to 1500 lux, enabling intelligent automation based on both motion and ambient light conditions. Powered by two CR2450 lithium batteries, the sensor delivers one of the longest battery lifespans among Matter over Thread sensors, lasting up to 2 years.

In 2025, Aqara released firmware version 1.0.3.0 for the P2, upgrading it to Matter 1.4 specification and adding several new features. The compact design measures just 33.1 x 33.1 x 41.6mm and operates as a Minimal Thread Device (not a repeater), ensuring maximum battery efficiency. The sensor establishes direct connections with major platforms without requiring Aqara-specific infrastructure, though it can also integrate with the Aqara Home app for additional features.
