The Philips Hue Motion Sensor is a battery-powered PIR (passive infrared) detector that automatically triggers your Hue lights when motion is detected. This indoor sensor includes three integrated sensing capabilities: motion detection, ambient light sensing (to prevent lights from activating during daylight), and a temperature sensor that is exposed to Apple HomeKit and select other platforms for advanced automation possibilities.

The sensor uses the Zigbee protocol to communicate with the Hue Bridge—it cannot function as a standalone device or control lights directly without a Bridge. Once connected, it enables sophisticated automation such as turning on lights when you enter a room, adjusting brightness based on time of day, and triggering specific scenes based on motion. The Bridge supports up to 10 accessories including multiple motion sensors.

Powered by two AAA batteries with a two-year lifespan, the sensor benefits from Zigbee's low power requirements for long-lasting operation. It is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit via the Hue Bridge, with voice assistants able to react to sensor triggers for expanded automation possibilities. Note that this is a motion sensor, not a presence sensor—it detects movement rather than occupancy.
