iRobot Roomba Combo j9+
Robot Vacuums iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ iRobot $598.00

The central challenge of robot vacuum-mop combos has always been simple: how do you mop hard floors without soaking your carpets? Most competitors solve this by lifting the mop pad a few millimeters off the ground when transitioning to carpet — enough to avoid dripping, but not enough to prevent a damp pad from touching carpet fibers. The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ takes a fundamentally different approach: its mop arm physically retracts to the top of the robot, lifting the pad completely away from the floor when carpet is detected.

It's a clever piece of engineering, and it works. But at $999.99, the Combo j9+ enters a fiercely competitive market where Chinese manufacturers like Roborock and Dreame are offering more dock features and comparable cleaning performance for similar or lower prices. After six weeks of daily cleaning in our mixed-floor test home (hardwood living areas, carpeted bedrooms), here's whether iRobot's engineering advantage justifies the premium.

Design & Build

A-

The Combo j9+ looks like a traditional Roomba with a small backpack. The mop arm sits on top of the robot when retracted, adding noticeable height — the robot stands about 4.1 inches tall, compared to 3.4 inches for the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra. This extra height means the Combo j9+ can't fit under some furniture that lower-profile competitors can. Our test home's couch with 4-inch clearance was a no-go zone for the j9+, while the Roborock slid under easily.

The mop retraction mechanism itself is fascinating to watch. When the robot approaches carpet, the arm swings up and positions the mop pad on top of the unit, completely clear of the floor. When transitioning back to hard floors, it swings back down and resumes mopping. The whole process takes about two seconds and is remarkably reliable — in six weeks of daily use, we never observed a failure of the mechanism.

The Clean Base auto-empty dock is substantial but not unreasonable in size. It holds up to 60 days of debris in its enclosed bag, which contains dust effectively and makes emptying a clean, allergen-friendly process. The dock is finished in a neutral white that blends into most rooms. Build quality throughout is excellent — this feels like a premium product, which it should at this price.

Features

A

The auto-retract mop is the headline feature, and it deserves the attention. Unlike competitors that "lift" their mop pads a few millimeters, the j9+ physically moves the entire mop assembly to the top of the robot. This means carpets stay completely dry — not "mostly dry" or "dry enough," but genuinely untouched by the mop pad. If you have a home with mixed flooring, this is a meaningful advantage.

PrecisionVision navigation uses a front-facing camera and machine learning to identify and avoid obstacles. During testing, it successfully navigated around shoes, pet bowls, charging cables, and chair legs with impressive consistency. It's not perfect — it occasionally bumped into dark-colored furniture legs — but it's among the better obstacle avoidance systems we've tested.

Additional notable features include:

  • Smart Scrub — a back-and-forth mopping pattern for stuck-on stains that noticeably improves mopping effectiveness
  • Carpet Boost — automatically increases suction power on carpets for deeper cleaning
  • 3-stage cleaning system with dual rubber brushes that resist hair tangles
  • Comprehensive mapping with room recognition, keep-out zones, and cleaning schedules per room

What's notably absent compared to competitors: the Clean Base doesn't wash the mop pad (you remove and wash it manually), doesn't refill the robot's water tank, and doesn't include a hot-air drying feature. The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra's dock does all three of these things, which is worth noting at this price point.

Performance

A-

Vacuuming performance is strong and consistent. The dual rubber brush extractors handle pet hair, crumbs, and fine dust effectively on both hard floors and carpets. Carpet Boost engages noticeably when transitioning from hard floors, increasing suction to a louder but more powerful level. Edge cleaning is adequate — the single side brush reaches into corners reasonably well, though dedicated edge-cleaning robots like the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra with its extending side brush do better.

Mopping is effective for maintenance cleaning and light messes. The Smart Scrub back-and-forth pattern makes a real difference on kitchen floors with dried drips or light food stains. For serious mopping — dried sauce, muddy footprints, sticky spills — you'll still want to spot-mop by hand. The water tank is modest in size and lasted about 600 square feet of hard floor in our testing before needing a refill, since the dock doesn't auto-refill.

Navigation is methodical and thorough. The j9+ builds its map over the first few runs and then cleans in efficient straight lines. It reliably returned to its dock to empty debris mid-clean on larger runs and resumed cleaning where it left off. Battery life averaged about 90 minutes on standard suction — enough for a moderately sized home in one pass, but larger homes may see the robot return to charge mid-clean.

The mop retraction mechanism performed flawlessly during our testing period. We placed white paper towels on carpet along the robot's transition path and never found a single wet spot. This is the j9+'s clearest win over competitors with basic mop-lift systems.

Ease of Use

A-

The iRobot app is well-designed and intuitive, walking you through setup with clear instructions. Initial mapping takes two to three cleaning runs, after which you can label rooms, set per-room cleaning preferences, and create schedules. The interface is clean and doesn't overwhelm you with options — a welcome contrast to some Chinese competitors' apps that feel like they were designed by engineers rather than UX designers.

Day-to-day operation is largely hands-off. Schedule your cleaning runs, and the j9+ handles the rest — vacuuming, mopping, emptying debris, and returning to its dock. The Clean Base bags last about two months and are easy to swap. The main maintenance task is manually washing the mop pad, which iRobot recommends after each mopping session. This is where the experience falls behind competitors with self-washing docks — pulling out a dirty mop pad and rinsing it by hand feels decidedly low-tech for a $999 robot.

Integration with Alexa and Google Assistant allows voice commands like "clean the kitchen" or "send Roomba home," which work reliably. iRobot OS's room-specific intelligence improves over time, learning your cleaning patterns and suggesting schedules based on pet shedding seasons and high-traffic areas. It's a thoughtful feature that demonstrates iRobot's software maturity.

Value

B

The Combo j9+ launched at $1,399 and has settled to a typical street price of $999 — sometimes dipping below $800 during sales. At $999, it faces serious competition from robots that offer more dock features for less money. The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra ($1,099 MSRP but frequently on sale for $900-1,000) includes a dock that washes the mop pad, refills the water tank, empties the dustbin, and dries the mop with hot air. The Dreame L20 Ultra offers similar dock capabilities at competitive pricing.

What the j9+ offers that competitors don't is the physically retractable mop. If you have significant carpet area mixed with hard floors, this mechanism provides genuinely better carpet protection than any mop-lift system. You also get iRobot's mature software ecosystem, reliable customer support based in the US, and a brand with a long track record in the robot vacuum space.

The ongoing costs are reasonable: replacement Clean Base bags run about $20 for a three-pack (lasting roughly six months), and replacement mop pads are $15 each. No subscription is required for any features.

If the auto-retract mop solves a real problem for your floor layout, the j9+ is worth considering. If your home is mostly hard floors or you want the most capable dock, the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is the better value proposition at similar real-world pricing.

Pros

  • Auto-retract mop physically lifts to the top of the robot, keeping carpets genuinely dry — not just "mostly dry"
  • PrecisionVision navigation reliably avoids obstacles including shoes, cables, and pet bowls
  • Smart Scrub back-and-forth mopping pattern is noticeably more effective on stuck-on kitchen messes
  • iRobot app is polished and intuitive with smart scheduling suggestions based on usage patterns
  • Dual rubber brush extractors resist hair tangles and perform well on both hard floors and carpet

Cons

  • Clean Base dock doesn't wash the mop pad, refill the water tank, or dry the mop — features competitors include at this price
  • $999 faces stiff competition from Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra which offers more dock features at similar real-world pricing
  • Added height from mop mechanism (4.1 inches) prevents the robot from fitting under some low-clearance furniture
  • Battery life of ~90 minutes on standard suction means larger homes may require a mid-clean recharge

Final Grade

A-

The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ is a well-engineered robot vacuum-mop with one genuinely unique advantage: its physically retractable mop arm keeps carpets completely dry in a way that no competitor can match. PrecisionVision navigation is reliable, vacuuming performance is strong, and the iRobot app is one of the most polished in the category.

However, the $999 price is difficult to justify when the dock lacks mop washing, water refilling, and hot-air drying features that competitors include at similar price points. Manually washing the mop pad after each session undermines the "hands-off" promise that premium robot vacuums should deliver. The added height from the mop mechanism also limits under-furniture access compared to slimmer competitors.

For homes with a genuine mix of carpet and hard floors where keeping carpet dry during mopping is a priority, the Combo j9+ solves a real problem that no competitor solves as well. For everyone else, the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra or Dreame L20 Ultra offer more comprehensive cleaning ecosystems at competitive prices. iRobot's engineering is impressive, but the competition has caught up — and in some areas, pulled ahead.
