Light Strips

Smart LED strips are the most fun you can have with lighting for under $50. Stick them behind your TV, under kitchen cabinets, along shelves, or beneath a bed frame and suddenly a room has atmosphere. But the quality gap between cheap strips and good ones is huge, and placement makes or breaks the look.

Addressable vs. non-addressable is the key distinction. Non-addressable strips light up in one color at a time. They're cheaper and fine for under-cabinet lighting or a solid backlight. Addressable strips (often labeled "RGBIC") can show multiple colors simultaneously and do flowing, chase, and gradient effects. If you want that rainbow wave behind your desk, you need addressable.

Things to pay attention to:

• LED density -- 30 LEDs/m is sparse and you'll see individual dots. 60/m is standard. 120/m gives smoother, more even light but draws more power.
• Length and cutting -- Most strips come in 16.4ft (5m) rolls with cut marks every 1-3 inches. You can't easily reconnect cut pieces without soldering. Measure first.
• Power injection -- On runs over 16ft, the far end gets dimmer and colors shift. Better strips include power injection points. This matters a lot for longer installs.
• Adhesive -- The 3M tape works on clean, smooth surfaces. On textured walls or warm spots, strips fall down within weeks. Mounting clips or aluminum channels help.

Where they look great vs. tacky: Strips look best when the LEDs are hidden and you only see the glow -- behind TVs, under cabinets, inside shelving, under stair treads. Stuck along a ceiling without a diffuser? Around a door frame? That looks cheap no matter how much you spent. If you can see individual LED dots, you need an aluminum channel with a frosted diffuser.

Protocol and control: Most strips are WiFi-based with a phone app. Govee and LIFX have solid apps. Philips Hue strips use Zigbee (need the Hue bridge) and integrate well with the Hue ecosystem. For music or TV sync, Govee and Hue both offer camera-based solutions.
