What You Will Need
- Aqara Presence Sensor FP300
- Aqara Home app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4 GHz WiFi network
- USB-C power cable and adapter (included)
- Mounting bracket and adhesive or screws (included)
Step 1: Understand the FP300 Capabilities
The Aqara Presence Sensor FP300 is the latest generation of Aqara's mmWave presence sensors. Like the FP2, it connects via WiFi directly without requiring a separate Aqara hub. The FP300 features improved detection accuracy, expanded zone configuration, and enhanced fall detection capabilities. It can distinguish between stationary and moving occupants and supports multi-zone presence detection for granular automation triggers.
Step 2: Choose a Mounting Location
For optimal performance, mount the FP300 on a wall at a height of approximately 1.2 to 1.5 meters (4 to 5 feet), or on the ceiling looking straight down. The sensor's detection range covers a wide area in front of it, so aim it toward the center of the room. Avoid pointing it directly at large metal surfaces, mirrors, or windows, as these can reflect the radar signal and cause inaccurate readings.
Step 3: Mount the Sensor
- Attach the mounting bracket to the wall or ceiling using the included adhesive pad for a non-permanent installation, or use screws and anchors for a more secure mount.
- Snap the FP300 onto the bracket. Adjust the angle so the sensor faces into the room.
- Connect the USB-C power cable to the sensor and route it neatly along the wall to a nearby power outlet. The FP300 requires continuous power.
Step 4: Add the Sensor to Aqara Home
- Open the Aqara Home app and tap the + button.
- Select Presence Sensor FP300 from the device list or scan the QR code on the sensor body.
- Hold the reset button on the sensor for 5 seconds until the indicator light flashes rapidly.
- Select your 2.4 GHz WiFi network and enter your password.
- The app will connect to the sensor. Once paired, assign it to a room and give it a name such as "Bedroom Presence."
Step 5: Configure Detection Zones
The FP300 supports multi-zone detection, allowing you to define specific areas within the room that report presence independently.
- Navigate to the sensor's device page in the Aqara Home app and open Zone Settings.
- The app displays a top-down representation of the sensor's detection area. Draw zones over key areas such as a bed, desk, or doorway.
- Label each zone with a clear name for use in automations.
- Adjust the detection sensitivity per zone. Use lower sensitivity for zones near heat sources or fans that may cause false readings.
Step 6: Enable Fall Detection (If Applicable)
The FP300 includes an optional fall detection feature that can alert you if someone falls in the monitored area. This is particularly useful for elderly family members. Enable fall detection in the sensor's settings within the Aqara Home app and configure notifications to alert you or a family member immediately when a fall is detected.
Step 7: Create Automations
With zone-based presence data, you can build precise automations in the Aqara Home app or through Apple Home:
- Turn on bathroom lights when someone enters and off after 2 minutes of no presence.
- Activate a bedside lamp when presence is detected in the bed zone at night.
- Send a push notification if no movement is detected in an elderly relative's room for an extended period.
- Adjust HVAC settings based on room occupancy using the Aqara Thermostat Hub W200.
Step 8: Connect to Smart Home Platforms
The FP300 supports Apple HomeKit natively, with each detection zone appearing as an independent occupancy sensor. It also supports Matter, enabling direct integration with Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and other Matter-compatible platforms. Link your Aqara account in the desired platform to begin using the sensor across your smart home ecosystem.
Tips
- After installation, spend a few days observing the sensor's behavior and fine-tuning zone boundaries and sensitivity levels.
- The FP300 detects through lightweight materials like curtains but not through walls or solid doors.
- Keep the sensor firmware updated through the Aqara Home app for ongoing accuracy improvements.
- If you experience ghost presence detections, check for oscillating fans, robotic vacuums, or pets in the detection area.
