What You Will Need
- Eve Motion (Matter) sensor
- Two AA batteries (included)
- iPhone or iPad with the Eve app installed
- Matter-compatible home hub (Apple TV, HomePod, or other Matter controller)
- Mounting plate and adhesive strip or screws (included)
Step 1: Insert Batteries
Open the battery compartment on the back of the Eve Motion and insert two AA batteries, following the polarity markings. The sensor will power on immediately. Batteries typically last about one year with normal motion detection activity.
Step 2: Choose a Mounting Location
The Eve Motion detects movement within a 120-degree field of view at a range of approximately 30 feet (9 meters). Position the sensor to cover the area where motion detection is most useful:
- Hallway or entryway — to trigger lights when someone walks in
- Front porch or driveway — to detect visitors and trigger alerts (the sensor is IPX3 water-resistant)
- Bathroom or closet — to automatically turn on lights when you enter
- Staircase — for hands-free lighting activation
Mount the sensor at a height of about four to six feet for optimal person detection. Avoid pointing it directly at heat sources or windows with direct sunlight, as these can cause false triggers.
Step 3: Add to Your Smart Home via the Eve App
- Open the Eve app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Add Accessory.
- Scan the Matter setup code on the Eve Motion or the included card.
- The app will connect via Thread if a Thread border router is available, or via Bluetooth.
- Assign the sensor to a room, such as "Hallway" or "Front Porch."
- Give it a descriptive name like "Hallway Motion" or "Porch Motion."
As a Matter device, the Eve Motion works with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. Choose your preferred platform during the setup process.
Step 4: Mount the Sensor
- Attach the mounting plate to the wall using the included adhesive strip or screws.
- For adhesive mounting, clean the wall surface first and press the plate firmly for 30 seconds.
- For screw mounting, mark the holes, drill pilot holes, and secure with screws.
- Snap the Eve Motion onto the mounting plate. The ball-and-socket design allows you to adjust the angle.
- Point the sensor toward the area you want to monitor.
Step 5: Configure Sensitivity and Duration
In the Eve app, select the Eve Motion and adjust the following settings:
- Sensitivity — set to high for detecting small movements or low to only trigger on larger motions, reducing false alerts from pets or small animals.
- Duration — set how long the sensor reports "motion detected" after the last movement is sensed. This affects how long automation-triggered lights stay on, for example. Options typically range from a few seconds to several minutes.
Step 6: Create Motion-Based Automations
The Eve Motion is most powerful when used to trigger automations. In the Eve app or your smart home platform's app:
- Turn on lights when motion is detected and turn them off after a set period of no motion.
- Send a notification when motion is detected at the front door while you are away.
- Activate a scene — for example, trigger a "Welcome Home" scene that turns on specific lights and adjusts the thermostat.
- Time-based conditions — set automations to only trigger after sunset or during specific hours.
Step 7: Review Motion History
The Eve app provides a detailed history of all motion events, including timestamps and duration. Use this data to understand activity patterns in your home, verify that automations are working correctly, and adjust sensor placement if needed.
Tips for Best Performance
- The Eve Motion with Thread support connects to the Thread mesh network for faster response times and extended range. Ensure a Thread border router (HomePod Mini, Apple TV 4K) is within range.
- Avoid mounting the sensor near HVAC vents, as air temperature changes can trigger false motion events with PIR sensors.
- The IPX3 rating means the sensor is protected against light rain and splashing, making it suitable for covered outdoor areas. Do not expose it to heavy rain or submerge it.
- Replace batteries when the Eve app shows a low battery notification to avoid gaps in motion detection.
