What's in the Box

Inside the packaging for your Bosch Smart Home Motion Detector II, you will find the motion detector unit, a mounting plate with an adhesive strip, two mounting screws with wall plugs, two AA batteries, and the quick-start guide. Confirm all items are present before you begin installation. You will also need the Bosch Smart Home app and a Bosch Smart Home Controller (sold separately) already set up on your network.

Prerequisites

The Bosch Smart Home Motion Detector II communicates wirelessly with the Bosch Smart Home Controller via the Zigbee protocol. Before installation, ensure the following:

  • Your Bosch Smart Home Controller is powered on, connected to your home network, and registered in the Bosch Smart Home app
  • The Bosch Smart Home app is installed and up to date on your iOS or Android device
  • You have chosen a mounting location that provides a clear line of detection — ideally a corner or wall at approximately 7 feet (2.1 meters) high, pointing toward the area you want to monitor
  • The chosen location is within wireless range of the Bosch Smart Home Controller (typically up to 100 feet indoors, depending on walls and obstructions)
  • The detector should not face windows with direct sunlight or heat sources, as these can trigger false readings

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Insert the batteries: Open the battery compartment on the back of the Motion Detector II by sliding the cover. Insert the two included AA batteries, observing the correct polarity markings. Close the compartment securely.
  2. Add the device in the app: Open the Bosch Smart Home app and navigate to "Devices." Tap the "+" icon to add a new device and select "Motion Detector II" from the list. The app will prompt you to scan the QR code on the back of the detector or enter the device ID manually.
  3. Pair the detector: Follow the app instructions to put the Motion Detector II into pairing mode. The LED on the front will flash during pairing. Once the app confirms a successful connection to the Bosch Smart Home Controller, the LED will stop flashing.
  4. Assign a room: The app will ask you to assign the detector to a specific room in your smart home setup. Select or create the room where the detector will be installed.
  5. Mount the detector: Attach the mounting plate to the wall using either the included adhesive strip (for smooth, clean surfaces) or the screws and wall plugs (for more permanent or textured surfaces). Angle the plate so the sensor faces the area you want to cover. Snap the detector onto the mounting plate until it clicks into place.
  6. Test the sensor: Walk through the detection area and verify in the Bosch Smart Home app that motion events are being registered. Adjust the mounting angle if the detection zone does not cover your desired area.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Bosch Smart Home Motion Detector II works within the Bosch Smart Home ecosystem and can trigger automations through the Bosch Smart Home app. Common uses include turning on lights when motion is detected, activating your security alarm in away mode, or sending push notifications when unexpected movement occurs. The detector also measures room temperature, which can be used to trigger heating automations. For broader integration, the Bosch Smart Home system supports IFTTT, allowing you to connect motion events to other smart home platforms and services.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the detector does not pair, ensure the Bosch Smart Home Controller is online and that you are within range. Try removing and reinserting the batteries to restart the pairing process. If you experience frequent false triggers, reposition the detector away from windows, heating vents, or areas where pets move frequently. Low battery warnings will appear in the app — replace both AA batteries at the same time for best performance. For persistent connectivity issues, check for firmware updates for both the detector and the controller through the Bosch Smart Home app.
