What's in the Box
Your iRobot Roomba j9+ package should contain: the Roomba j9+ robot vacuum, the Clean Base Auto-Empty Station, a power cord, a spare side brush, an auto-empty bag, and the quick start guide. Verify all items are present and undamaged before proceeding with setup.
Prerequisites
Before starting, make sure you have:
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network and the password
- The iRobot Home app installed on your iOS or Android phone
- A flat area against a wall for the Clean Base, with at least 1.5 feet of clearance on each side and 4 feet of open space in front
- Floors picked up and free of loose cables, small objects, and shoes for the initial mapping run
Step-by-Step Setup
- Set up the Clean Base Auto-Empty Station: Place the Clean Base against a wall on a hard, level surface. Connect the power cord and plug it in. The base should illuminate with a green light. Open the lid and install an auto-empty bag by pressing it down until it locks into place.
- Prepare the Roomba j9+: Remove all protective films, tape, and packaging from the robot. Flip it over and install the side brush by pressing it firmly onto the underside spindle. The Roomba j9+ is a vacuum-only model (no mopping pad), so no water tank setup is needed.
- Charge the robot: Place the Roomba j9+ on the Clean Base to start charging. The light ring will pulse while charging. A full initial charge takes about 2 to 3 hours. Let the battery charge completely before the first cleaning run.
- Connect via the iRobot Home app: Open the iRobot Home app and sign in or create an account. Tap "+" to add a new device and select "Roomba j9+" from the list. Follow the app's pairing instructions to connect the robot to your 2.4 GHz WiFi. When prompted, press and hold the Home and Spot Clean buttons on the robot until it emits a tone confirming it's in pairing mode.
- Map your home: Launch a mapping run from the app. The Roomba j9+ uses PrecisionVision Navigation to map your floor plan while identifying obstacles like shoes, cords, and pet waste using its front-facing camera. Keep doors open and lights on for the best mapping results. The first run focuses on learning your layout.
- Customize your smart map: After the mapping run, open the floor plan in the iRobot Home app. Rename rooms, adjust room boundaries, set per-room suction levels, and define keep-out zones around areas you want the robot to avoid. You can schedule cleaning routines and choose which rooms to clean on which days.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The Roomba j9+ works with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT. To set up voice control, open the Alexa or Google Home app and link the iRobot skill or integration. Once connected, try commands like "Alexa, tell Roomba to vacuum the living room" or "Hey Google, start the Roomba." Through IFTTT, you can build automations such as starting the vacuum when your smart lock detects you've left home. The iRobot Home app's built-in iRobot OS intelligence also offers smart scheduling suggestions based on your habits, pet shedding seasons, and pollen counts in your area.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the Roomba j9+ doesn't appear during app pairing, confirm your phone is connected to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Reset the robot's WiFi by pressing and holding the Home and Spot Clean buttons simultaneously for 20 seconds until the light ring flashes white. If the Clean Base isn't auto-emptying, make sure the bag is properly seated and not full, and clean the evacuation port on the robot's underside. Check for firmware updates in the iRobot Home app immediately after setup to ensure you have the latest navigation and obstacle avoidance improvements.
