What You Will Need

  • Amazon Echo Pop
  • Smartphone with the Alexa app installed
  • Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz or 5GHz)
  • USB-C power adapter (included)
  • An Amazon account

Step 1: Unbox and Power On

  1. Remove the Echo Pop from its packaging. The compact semi-sphere design fits easily in tight spaces like bookshelves, nightstands, and bathroom counters.
  2. Plug the included USB-C power adapter into the port on the back of the device and connect it to a wall outlet.
  3. The light bar on the front of the Echo Pop will pulse blue, indicating the device is starting up and entering setup mode.
  4. Wait about 20 seconds for the light to change to an orange spinning pattern, which means the device is ready to be configured.

Step 2: Open the Alexa App

  1. Open the Alexa app on your smartphone. If you do not have it yet, download it from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
  2. Sign in with your Amazon account or create a new one.
  3. The app may automatically detect the new Echo Pop and display a setup banner at the top of the screen. Tap it to begin.
  4. If no banner appears, tap Devices at the bottom, then tap + in the upper right corner and select Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo Pop.

Step 3: Connect to Wi-Fi

  1. The Alexa app will prompt your phone to connect to the Echo Pop's temporary Wi-Fi network for configuration. Allow this when prompted.
  2. Select your home Wi-Fi network from the list. The Echo Pop supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
  3. Enter your Wi-Fi password and tap Connect.
  4. The light bar will spin blue while connecting. Once connected, it will briefly flash green and Alexa will say "Your device is ready."

Step 4: Assign to a Room

  1. The app will ask you to assign the Echo Pop to a room or group such as Bedroom, Office, or Bathroom.
  2. Assigning the device to a room allows you to give voice commands by room, such as "Alexa, turn off the bedroom lights."
  3. You can change the room assignment later in the Alexa app under Devices.

Step 5: Set Up Your Preferences

  1. Choose your preferred music streaming service. You can link Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, iHeartRadio, and others in the Alexa app under Settings > Music & Podcasts.
  2. Configure the wake word if you want to use something other than "Alexa." Options include "Echo," "Amazon," and "Computer." Change this in Settings > Device Settings > Wake Word.
  3. Enable or disable voice purchasing and set a confirmation PIN if you want to prevent accidental orders.

Step 6: Connect Smart Home Devices

  1. The Echo Pop works as a voice controller for smart home devices connected through the Alexa ecosystem.
  2. To add devices, tap Devices > + > Add Device in the Alexa app and follow the instructions for your specific device brand.
  3. Once devices are added, control them with voice commands like "Alexa, turn on the living room lamp" or "Alexa, set the thermostat to 72."

Step 7: Try It Out

Now that your Echo Pop is set up, try these commands to get started:

  • "Alexa, play some jazz music" - Stream music from your linked service
  • "Alexa, what's the weather today?" - Get a local weather forecast
  • "Alexa, set a timer for 10 minutes" - Set a countdown timer
  • "Alexa, tell me a joke" - A quick way to test that everything is working

Tips

  • The Echo Pop has a front-firing speaker that projects sound forward. Point the flat front of the device toward you for the best audio experience.
  • Despite its compact size, the Echo Pop supports all the same Alexa skills and routines as larger Echo devices.
  • Press and hold the Action button (the round button on top) for 20 seconds to factory reset the device if you ever need to start over.
  • The Echo Pop does not have a 3.5mm audio output. Use Bluetooth to connect it to an external speaker if you want louder sound.
