What You Will Need
- Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen)
- Smartphone with the Alexa app installed
- Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz or 5GHz)
- Power adapter (included)
- An Amazon account
Step 1: Unbox and Power On
- Remove the Echo Show 5 from its packaging along with the included power adapter.
- Place the device on a flat surface where you can comfortably see the 5.5-inch display. A nightstand, kitchen counter, or desk works well.
- Connect the power adapter to the port on the back of the device and plug it into a wall outlet.
- The screen will light up with the Amazon logo and the device will boot up in about 30 seconds.
Step 2: Select Language and Connect to Wi-Fi
- The on-screen setup wizard will prompt you to choose your language. Tap your preferred option.
- The device will scan for available Wi-Fi networks. Select your network from the list.
- Enter your Wi-Fi password using the on-screen keyboard. Tap Connect.
- The Echo Show 5 supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. If you have a dual-band router, the 5GHz band provides faster speeds at closer range.
Step 3: Sign In to Your Amazon Account
- After connecting to Wi-Fi, the device will prompt you to sign in to your Amazon account.
- Enter your Amazon email address and password on the touchscreen.
- If you have two-factor authentication enabled, enter the verification code sent to your phone or email.
- Alternatively, the screen may display a code you can enter at amazon.com/code on another device to authenticate.
Step 4: Confirm Your Settings
- The setup wizard will ask you to confirm your time zone and location. These settings enable accurate weather, alarms, and local information.
- Choose whether to enable Do Not Disturb scheduling for nighttime hours.
- Select your preferred wallpaper or enable rotating backgrounds from your Amazon Photos or curated collections.
Step 5: Set Up the Camera (Optional)
The Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) includes a 2 MP camera that you can use for video calls and home monitoring.
- To disable the camera for privacy, slide the physical camera shutter on top of the device to the left to cover the lens.
- To use the camera for video calls, leave the shutter open and enable Drop In or Alexa calling in the Alexa app under Communicate.
- To use the device as a home security camera while you are away, enable Home Monitoring in the Alexa app under Devices > Cameras.
Step 6: Customize Your Home Screen
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to access Settings.
- Tap Home & Clock to choose a clock face style for the always-on display.
- Tap Display to adjust brightness, enable adaptive brightness, and set a night mode schedule.
- Enable or disable home screen cards such as weather, reminders, news, and smart home device controls by going to Settings > Home Screen.
Step 7: Add to the Alexa App
- Open the Alexa app on your phone and tap Devices.
- Your Echo Show 5 should appear automatically. If not, tap + and select Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo Show.
- Assign the device to a room group so you can control it with commands like "Alexa, turn off the bedroom lights."
Tips
- Say "Alexa, show me my smart home dashboard" to see and control all your connected devices from the touchscreen.
- Use the 3.5mm audio output on the back to connect external speakers for better sound quality.
- The Echo Show 5 makes an excellent bedside alarm clock. Say "Alexa, set an alarm for 7 AM" to get started.
- Swipe left on the home screen to access quick-launch widgets for music, routines, and smart home controls.
