What You'll Need

  • Bose Portable Smart Speaker
  • Bose Music app (iOS or Android)
  • Wi-Fi network (for home setup and voice features)
  • USB-C cable (included) for charging

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Charge the speaker using the included USB-C cable. It takes a few hours for a full charge. You can start setup while it is still charging.
  2. Download the Bose Music app and sign in to your Bose account.
  3. Power on the speaker by pressing the power button on top.
  4. Add the speaker in the app:
    • Tap "Add Product" and select Portable Smart Speaker
    • The app uses Bluetooth for initial discovery
    • Follow the connection steps on screen
  5. Connect to Wi-Fi for home use. Enter your network credentials when prompted.
  6. Set up your voice assistant. The speaker supports both Alexa and Google Assistant. Pick one during setup.

Placement and Sound Tips

The Portable Smart Speaker delivers 360-degree sound, so it sounds best when placed in the middle of a space rather than pushed against a wall. On a dining table, kitchen island, or patio table, the sound spreads evenly to everyone around it.

Indoors on a hard surface, you get stronger bass response. Outdoors on a picnic table, the sound is a bit more open but still carries well. The speaker is IPX4 rated, so it handles splashes and light rain but is not meant for submersion. Keep it away from the pool edge.

An optional Bose charging cradle is available separately. Drop the speaker onto the cradle and it charges without fiddling with cables. This is worth considering if you move it between indoor and outdoor use frequently.

Wi-Fi vs. Bluetooth

At home on Wi-Fi, the Portable Smart Speaker acts as a full-featured smart speaker with voice control, multi-room audio, AirPlay 2, and Spotify Connect. When you take it outside or to a friend's house, press the Bluetooth button on top to switch to Bluetooth mode for direct streaming from your phone.

Keep in mind that voice assistants only work on Wi-Fi. When you are in Bluetooth mode away from your home network, Alexa and Google Assistant are unavailable. You can still play music and take phone calls via Bluetooth without any issues.

Multi-Room Audio

Group the Portable Smart Speaker with other Bose smart speakers and soundbars for synchronized music in multiple rooms. Set up groups in the Bose Music app. AirPlay 2 also lets you group it with non-Bose speakers that support AirPlay, giving you more flexibility if you have a mixed setup.

Troubleshooting

  • Switching between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Press the Bluetooth button on top to toggle. When you return home, the speaker should reconnect to Wi-Fi automatically within a couple of minutes. If it does not, open the Bose Music app and select the speaker to force the reconnection.
  • Battery not charging or charging slowly: Make sure you are using a USB-C charger that supplies at least 15W. Low-power phone chargers will charge the speaker very slowly or not at all. The charging cradle, if you have one, needs a proper power connection too.
  • Voice assistant not working: Voice features require a Wi-Fi connection. If you are on Bluetooth only, the assistant will not respond. Switch back to Wi-Fi to re-enable voice control.
  • Audio distortion at high volume: Outdoors, it is tempting to crank the volume all the way up, but the speaker can distort at maximum. Back it down a couple of notches for cleaner sound.
  • Factory reset: Press and hold the Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously for about 10 seconds until the light pulses. The speaker will restart in setup mode.
