What's in the Box
Your Bose Smart Speaker 500 package includes the speaker unit, a power cable, and a quick-start guide. The speaker has a sleek, rectangular aluminum design with an anodized grille and a color LCD display on top. No additional accessories like wall mounts or auxiliary cables are included in the box — these are available separately from Bose if needed.
Prerequisites
Before setting up your Bose Smart Speaker 500, make sure you have the following ready:
- A power outlet near your desired speaker location
- A stable Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz — the Smart Speaker 500 supports both bands)
- The Bose Music app downloaded on your iOS or Android smartphone or tablet
- A Bose account (you can create one for free in the app during setup)
- If you plan to use voice assistants, an Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant account ready to link
Step-by-Step Setup
- Place the speaker: Position your Bose Smart Speaker 500 on a flat, stable surface. For best sound quality, keep it at least 6 inches from walls and corners. The speaker projects sound in a wide pattern, so a central location in the room works well.
- Connect to power: Plug the included power cable into the back of the speaker and into a wall outlet. The speaker will power on automatically, and the light bar on the front will glow amber while it boots up.
- Open the Bose Music app: Launch the Bose Music app on your phone. Sign in to your Bose account or create a new one. The app should detect the new speaker automatically and prompt you to begin setup.
- Connect to Wi-Fi: Follow the in-app prompts to connect the speaker to your home Wi-Fi network. The app will ask you to select your network and enter the password. The speaker supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, so choose whichever provides the strongest signal at the speaker's location.
- Name your speaker: Assign a name to the speaker (for example, "Living Room" or "Kitchen") so it is easy to identify, especially if you plan to add more Bose speakers later.
- Set up voice assistants: The Bose Smart Speaker 500 has Amazon Alexa built in and also supports Google Assistant. During setup, the app will offer to configure one or both voice assistants. Follow the prompts to link your Amazon or Google account. Once set up, you can use wake words like "Alexa" or "Hey Google" for hands-free control.
- Run software updates: After initial setup, the Bose Music app may prompt you to install a firmware update. Allow this to complete — it can take several minutes, and the speaker may restart during the process.
App Pairing and Streaming
With setup complete, you can stream music through the Bose Music app from services like Spotify, Amazon Music, TuneIn, Pandora, Deezer, and more. The speaker also supports AirPlay 2 for streaming directly from Apple devices and Bluetooth for connecting non-Wi-Fi devices. To use Bluetooth, press the Bluetooth button on the top of the speaker and pair from your device's Bluetooth settings.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The Bose Smart Speaker 500 functions as a full smart home hub when paired with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can control compatible lights, locks, thermostats, and other smart devices using voice commands. Create multi-room audio groups within the Bose Music app by adding other Bose smart speakers or soundbars. For Apple users, AirPlay 2 allows the speaker to participate in multi-room audio through the Apple Home app alongside other AirPlay-compatible speakers.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the speaker does not appear in the Bose Music app during setup, make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network and that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Power cycle the speaker by unplugging it for 10 seconds. If Wi-Fi connections drop frequently, try switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. A factory reset can be performed by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously for 10 seconds until the light bar pulses. After a reset, you will need to set up the speaker again from scratch.
