What You'll Need

  • ConBee II USB gateway
  • Computer or compatible smart home hub
  • USB extension cable (recommended)
  • deCONZ software, Zigbee2MQTT, or Home Assistant ZHA
  • Available USB 2.0 port (preferred)

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Connect via extension cable: Use a USB extension cable to position the ConBee II away from interference sources (USB 3.0, SSD drives).
  2. Plug in the gateway: Connect to your server or Raspberry Pi. The LED will glow green when powered.
  3. Install deCONZ (recommended): Download from Phoscon's website or install via apt: "sudo apt install deconz"
  4. Access Phoscon app: Open a web browser and go to http://your-ip-address/pwa (or use the Phoscon app).
  5. Create gateway: Follow the setup wizard to create a new Zigbee network.
  6. Set gateway password: Create a secure password for the gateway interface.
  7. For ZHA instead: In Home Assistant, go to Settings → Devices & Services → Add Integration → ZHA. Select ConBee II when prompted.
  8. For Zigbee2MQTT: Configure the serial port and set adapter type to "deconz" in configuration.yaml.
  9. Add devices: Click "Add new device" in your chosen interface, then put Zigbee devices in pairing mode.

Troubleshooting

  • Not detected: Check USB connection. Verify with "lsusb" command (should show Dresden Elektronik). Use USB 2.0 port or extension cable.
  • LED meanings: Green = powered and normal. Blinking green = transmitting. Red = firmware update mode.
  • Devices not pairing: Reset devices before pairing. Move closer to ConBee during initial pair. Check device compatibility list.
  • Firmware update: Use deCONZ GUI or GCFFlasher tool. Download firmware from Phoscon. Backup before updating.
  • Zigbee network issues: Check channel doesn't overlap with Wi-Fi. Avoid placing near USB 3.0 hubs. Add router devices for mesh coverage.
