What You Will Need
- Eve Button
- CR2032 coin cell battery (pre-installed)
- iPhone or iPad with the Eve app installed
- Apple Home hub (Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad) for automations and remote access
- At least one HomeKit-compatible device to control (lights, plugs, scenes, etc.)
Step 1: Understand What the Eve Button Does
The Eve Button is a physical smart home controller that triggers HomeKit scenes and actions with a press. It supports three types of button presses, each configurable to perform a different action:
- Single press — trigger one scene or action
- Double press — trigger a different scene or action
- Long press — trigger a third scene or action
This makes it ideal for controlling multiple smart home devices without reaching for your phone or using voice commands.
Step 2: Add the Eve Button to HomeKit
- Open the Eve app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Add Accessory.
- Scan the HomeKit setup code on the bottom of the Eve Button or on the included card.
- The app will connect to the button via Bluetooth.
- Assign the button to a room and give it a descriptive name, such as "Bedside Button" or "Desk Button."
The Eve Button uses Bluetooth Low Energy and does not connect to WiFi. An Apple Home hub is required for the button to trigger automations when you are away from home.
Step 3: Create Scenes to Assign to the Button
Before configuring the button presses, create the HomeKit scenes you want to trigger. In the Eve app or Apple Home app:
- Go to the Scenes section.
- Tap Add Scene.
- Select the devices and their desired states. For example, a "Good Night" scene might turn off all lights, lock the front door, and set the thermostat to a sleep temperature.
- Save the scene with a descriptive name.
Create two or three scenes that you want quick physical access to.
Step 4: Configure Button Actions
- In the Apple Home app, go to Automations.
- Tap Create New Automation.
- Select A Sensor Detects Something.
- Choose the Eve Button from the accessory list.
- Select the press type: Single Press, Double Press, or Long Press.
- Choose the scene or individual device action you want this press to trigger.
- Repeat for each press type you want to configure.
For example, you might set a single press to activate a "Good Morning" scene, a double press to trigger a "Leaving Home" scene, and a long press to activate "Good Night."
Step 5: Choose a Location for the Button
Place the Eve Button where you will use it most. Popular locations include:
- Nightstand — for controlling bedroom lights and evening routines
- Entryway table — for arming or disarming your home when leaving or arriving
- Desk — for quickly switching between work and break lighting scenes
- Coffee table — for controlling entertainment center devices
The button has a flat, stable base that sits securely on any surface. It does not need to be wall-mounted.
Step 6: Test Your Configuration
- Perform a single press and verify the assigned scene activates.
- Perform a double press and verify the second scene activates.
- Perform a long press (press and hold for about two seconds) and verify the third scene activates.
If any press does not work as expected, return to the automation settings in the Home app and verify the correct press type is linked to the correct scene.
Tips for Best Performance
- The Eve Button uses a CR2032 battery that typically lasts about one year. Replace it when the Eve app shows a low battery notification.
- Bluetooth range is approximately 30 feet. Ensure the button is within range of your Apple Home hub for reliable automation triggering.
- If response times feel slow, position a HomePod Mini or Apple TV closer to the button's location to serve as a nearby hub.
- You can reassign the button actions at any time through the Home app's automation settings without needing to re-pair the device.
