What You'll Need
- First Alert Z-Wave Plus Smoke + CO Alarm
- Smartphone with the First Alert app
- Ladder (for ceiling-mounted devices)
- Screwdriver
- Batteries (if not hardwired)
Step 1: Choose Locations
For smoke detectors: Install on every floor, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Keep away from kitchens and bathrooms to reduce false alarms.
For CO detectors: Install on every floor and near sleeping areas. Place at knee height since CO mixes evenly with air.
Step 2: Download the App
Install the First Alert app and create an account. This allows you to receive alerts on your phone.
Step 3: Add the Device
Open the app and tap "Add Device." Select the First Alert Z-Wave Plus Smoke + CO Alarm and follow the pairing instructions.
Step 4: Mount the Base Plate
Hold the base plate against the ceiling or wall and mark screw holes. Drill pilot holes if needed, then secure the base plate with screws.
Step 5: Install Batteries or Connect Power
For battery models, insert fresh batteries. For hardwired models, connect to household wiring (turn off power first) and install backup batteries.
Step 6: Attach the Detector
Twist or snap the detector onto the mounting plate until it locks securely in place.
Step 7: Test the Device
Press and hold the test button until the alarm sounds. Verify you receive a notification in the app.
Smart Home Integration
The First Alert Z-Wave Plus Smoke + CO Alarm connects via Z-Wave and works with Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant. Set up automations to turn on lights during an alarm or receive alerts on all your devices.
Maintenance
- Test monthly using the test button
- Replace batteries at least once a year
- Replace the entire unit every 10 years (smoke) or 7 years (CO)
- Vacuum around the detector every 6 months to prevent dust buildup
Troubleshooting
- Chirping: Usually indicates low battery
- False alarms: Relocate away from steam, cooking areas, or dusty environments
- Won't connect: Check hub connection and try re-pairing
