What You'll Need
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Home app (iOS or Android)
- Google account
- Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz or 5GHz)
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in your Nest Audio using the included power cable. The speaker will boot up and the LEDs on top will begin pulsing.
- Open the Google Home app. Download it first if you have not already, and sign in with your Google account.
- Add the device:
- Tap the "+" icon, then "Set up device," then "New device"
- Select your home (or create one)
- The app searches for nearby devices using Bluetooth
- Confirm the device when the Nest Audio plays a confirmation sound. Tap "Yes" in the app if you hear it.
- Choose a room name for the speaker. This helps with voice commands like "Hey Google, play music in the living room."
- Connect to your Wi-Fi network and enter the password when prompted.
- Set up Google Assistant preferences including Voice Match, which lets the speaker recognize your voice and give personalized results.
Placement and Sound Tips
The Nest Audio has a 75mm woofer and a 19mm tweeter packed into a fabric-covered body. It sounds best on a hard surface like a shelf or countertop. Keep it a few inches from the wall to avoid bass buildup that can make music sound muddy.
The speaker has a feature called Ambient IQ that automatically adjusts the volume of spoken responses based on background noise in the room. If you are in a noisy kitchen, it speaks louder. In a quiet bedroom at night, it brings the volume down. This works automatically and does not need any configuration.
Media EQ is another automatic feature that adapts the sound profile based on what you are listening to, whether that is music, a podcast, or a spoken news briefing.
Multi-Room Audio
To play music across multiple Google speakers, create a speaker group in the Google Home app. Tap the "+" icon, select "Create speaker group," and pick which devices to include. Once grouped, say "Hey Google, play jazz on [group name]" and all speakers play in sync.
You can also create a stereo pair with two Nest Audio speakers. In the Google Home app, tap one of the speakers, go to Settings, then select "Pair with another speaker." Place them 4 to 6 feet apart for the best stereo separation.
Smart Home Integration
The Nest Audio works as a voice control hub for anything connected to your Google Home setup. Lights, thermostats, locks, and cameras from brands like Philips Hue, Nest, and TP-Link all respond to voice commands through this speaker. You can also set up routines in the Google Home app. For example, saying "Hey Google, good morning" can turn on your lights, read the weather, and start your coffee maker all at once.
Troubleshooting
- App cannot find the speaker: Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone during setup. If the speaker still does not appear, unplug it for 10 seconds, plug it back in, and try again.
- Wi-Fi connection drops: Move the Nest Audio closer to your router. If your network uses separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz names, try the 2.4GHz band since it offers better range through walls.
- Microphone not responding: Check the mute switch on the back of the speaker. When the switch shows orange, the mic is off. Toggle it to re-enable the microphone.
- Audio sounds distorted at high volume: The Nest Audio can push decent volume for its size, but if you hear distortion, back the volume down a notch. Placing it on a solid surface also helps.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the center of the speaker near the top for about 10 seconds. The assistant will confirm that the device is resetting. The mute button light turns orange during the reset process.
