Before You Begin

The Google Nest Hub Max is a large-screen smart display with a 10-inch HD touchscreen, a built-in Nest camera, and powerful stereo speakers. It combines the functionality of a smart display, video calling device, security camera, and smart home controller in a single device. Setup takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

What You Will Need

  • Google Nest Hub Max
  • The included power adapter and cable
  • The Google Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • A Google account
  • A 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network
  • A flat surface or shelf in a central location — kitchen counter, living room shelf, or home office desk

Step 1: Position and Power On

  1. Choose a location where the large display is easily visible and the built-in camera can cover the room if you plan to use it as a security camera.
  2. Place the Nest Hub Max on a stable, flat surface.
  3. Connect the power cable to the device and plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
  4. The Nest Hub Max will boot up and display a setup screen after about 30 seconds.

Step 2: Pair with the Google Home App

  1. Open the Google Home app on your phone.
  2. Tap the + button, then select Set up device and New device.
  3. Select your home. The app will scan for nearby devices.
  4. When the Nest Hub Max appears in the list, tap it to begin pairing.
  5. The app will play a confirmation sound from the Nest Hub Max. Tap Yes when you hear it to confirm the correct device.
  6. Assign the device to a room in your home.

Step 3: Connect to Wi-Fi

  1. Select your Wi-Fi network from the list of available networks.
  2. Enter your Wi-Fi password and wait for the connection to be established.
  3. The Nest Hub Max supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands. For streaming video, the 5 GHz band typically provides better performance.

Step 4: Configure Google Assistant and Accounts

  1. Sign in with your Google account.
  2. Set up Voice Match so the Assistant recognizes your voice and provides personalized information like calendar events and commute times.
  3. Enable Face Match if desired. This feature uses the built-in camera to visually identify household members and show personalized content on the display when they approach. You can opt out if you prefer not to use facial recognition.
  4. Choose your default music and video streaming services.
  5. Configure personal results preferences — decide whether the Nest Hub Max can show personal calendar entries, emails, and reminders.

Step 5: Set Up the Built-In Camera

  1. The Nest Hub Max includes a 6.5-megapixel Nest camera that can function as an indoor security camera.
  2. During setup, you can enable or disable the camera feature. When enabled, the camera can stream live video to the Google Home app on your phone when you are away.
  3. The camera supports motion and sound detection alerts. Configure these in the Google Home app under the Nest Hub Max's camera settings.
  4. A Nest Aware subscription provides video history storage (30 days with Nest Aware, 60 days with Nest Aware Plus). Without a subscription, you can view the live feed but not recorded events.
  5. When the camera is active, a green LED on the front of the device indicates it is in use. Use the physical switch on the back to disable the camera and microphone entirely when desired.

Step 6: Configure Display and Photo Frame

  1. Choose what appears on the display when idle — Google Photos albums, curated art gallery, clock, or weather.
  2. If using Google Photos, select specific albums or people to rotate through as a digital photo frame.
  3. The Ambient EQ feature automatically adjusts brightness and color temperature. Enable it for a natural-looking display in any lighting condition.

Step 7: Explore Smart Home Controls

  1. Swipe down from the top of the display to access smart home quick controls.
  2. All devices linked to your Google Home account will appear on the control panel — lights, thermostats, cameras, locks, and more.
  3. View live feeds from other Nest cameras directly on the Nest Hub Max's large display.
  4. Use voice commands like "Hey Google, show me the front door camera" to quickly view any camera feed.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use the Nest Hub Max for Google Meet or Duo video calls. The camera features auto-framing to keep you centered during calls.
  • Enable Quick Gestures in settings to control media playback by raising your hand — pause, play, or skip tracks without touching the screen or speaking.
  • Set up household Routines in the Google Home app to automate morning, bedtime, and departure sequences.
  • The stereo speakers on the Nest Hub Max deliver much better audio quality than the standard Nest Hub, making it well-suited for music playback and video streaming.
