What's in the Box
Your Govee M1 Matter LED Strip Lights (16.4ft) package includes the LED strip light roll, a control box, a power adapter, mounting clips, adhesive cleaning pads, and a quick start guide. The M1 is Govee's Matter-enabled LED strip, meaning it works natively with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings through the Matter smart home standard. This provides faster local control and broader compatibility than WiFi-only strips.
Prerequisites
- A smartphone with the Govee Home app installed (available on iOS and Android)
- A stable 2.4GHz WiFi network with the password ready
- A Govee Home account created and verified
- A Matter-compatible smart home hub or controller (Apple HomePod, Apple TV 4K, Google Nest Hub, Amazon Echo 4th Gen or newer, or Samsung SmartThings hub) if you plan to use Matter integration
- A clean, smooth mounting surface
- A power outlet within reach of the control box
Step-by-Step Installation
- Plan your layout before removing any adhesive backing. Measure the area and map out the route for the 16.4-foot strip. Like other RGBIC strips, the M1 cannot be cut or extended.
- Clean the mounting surface thoroughly with rubbing alcohol or the included cleaning pads. Allow the surface to dry completely.
- Peel a small section of adhesive backing at a time and press the strip firmly against the surface. Work methodically from the control box end along your planned route.
- At corners, bend the strip gently rather than creasing it. Use mounting clips to reinforce corners and sections that may sag.
- Connect the strip to the control box, then plug the power adapter into the control box and a wall outlet.
App Pairing via Govee Home
- Power on the strip. The LEDs will illuminate and the control box indicator will start flashing.
- Open the Govee Home app and tap "+" to add a new device.
- Select the M1 Matter Strip from the device list or scan the QR code on the packaging.
- Enable Bluetooth on your phone and follow the prompts to complete the initial Bluetooth pairing.
- Connect the strip to your 2.4GHz WiFi network by entering your password when prompted.
- Name the strip based on its location for easy identification.
Setting Up Matter Integration
The M1 strip's biggest advantage is its Matter support, which lets you add it to Apple Home, Google Home, or other Matter-compatible platforms for local control without relying on Govee's cloud servers. To enable Matter, open the device settings in the Govee Home app and look for the Matter setup option. The app will generate a Matter pairing code or QR code. Open your preferred smart home platform (for example, the Apple Home app) and use its "Add Accessory" feature to scan the Matter code. The strip will then appear in both the Govee Home app and your chosen platform, and you can control it from either one. Matter connections operate locally on your network, which means faster response times and continued operation even if your internet goes down.
Smart Home Integration Tips
With Matter enabled, the M1 strip integrates deeply into your existing smart home ecosystem. In Apple Home, you can add it to scenes and automations alongside non-Govee devices. In Google Home, it responds to routines and voice commands natively. The strip still supports the full range of Govee Home app features including RGBIC scene effects, music sync via the built-in microphone, and scheduled timers. For the best experience, use the Govee Home app for advanced lighting effects and your Matter platform for whole-home automations and routines.
Quick Troubleshooting
If Matter pairing fails, ensure your Matter hub is on the same network as the strip and that your hub's firmware is up to date. Restart both the hub and the strip's control box, then try pairing again. If the strip pairs in the Govee Home app but not through Matter, check that Matter is enabled in the device settings. For adhesion issues, reinforce with extra mounting clips. Never cut the M1 strip, as this will permanently damage the RGBIC circuitry.
