Your Govee WiFi Water Sensor package includes the water sensor unit, a CR2 battery (pre-installed or included separately), and a quick start guide. This compact sensor detects the presence of water through contact probes on its underside and sends instant notifications to your phone via the Govee Home app. It connects over WiFi, so alerts can reach you even when you are away from home, providing peace of mind against leaks and flooding in vulnerable areas.

Prerequisites

  • A smartphone with the Govee Home app installed (available on iOS and Android)
  • A stable 2.4GHz WiFi network with the password ready (5GHz is not supported)
  • A Govee Home account created and verified
  • The included CR2 battery installed in the sensor (check the battery compartment if it is not pre-installed)
  • A flat surface at the location where you want to monitor for water

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Open the battery compartment on the sensor and verify the CR2 battery is properly installed with the correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.
  2. Open the Govee Home app and tap the "+" icon to add a new device.
  3. Select "WiFi Water Sensor" from the device list or scan the QR code on the quick start guide.
  4. Press and hold the button on the sensor for three seconds until the LED indicator begins flashing, putting it into pairing mode.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the sensor to your 2.4GHz WiFi network. Enter your WiFi password when prompted.
  6. Once the app confirms a successful pairing, assign a name to the sensor based on its location, such as "Under Kitchen Sink," "Basement Floor," or "Water Heater."
  7. Test the sensor by dampening a paper towel and placing it under the sensor so it contacts the probes. You should receive a push notification on your phone within seconds and the sensor should emit an audible alert.

Optimal Placement Locations

The WiFi Water Sensor is most effective when placed directly on the floor in areas prone to leaks or flooding. The best locations include under kitchen and bathroom sinks where supply lines and drain connections can develop leaks, behind toilets where the supply valve connects, next to water heaters that may corrode and leak over time, near washing machines where supply hoses can fail, in basements where groundwater seepage is a concern, and near sump pumps to detect overflow. Place the sensor flat on the surface with the water-sensing probes facing down. Avoid placing it on thick carpet or uneven surfaces where the probes may not contact pooling water.

App Configuration and Notifications

In the Govee Home app, navigate to the sensor's settings to customize your alert preferences. Enable push notifications to receive instant alerts on your phone. You can also configure email alerts as a backup notification method. The app maintains a history log of all detection events, which can be helpful for identifying recurring moisture problems or slow leaks that happen at specific times. Check the battery level periodically in the app and replace the CR2 battery when the low battery warning appears to ensure uninterrupted protection.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Govee WiFi Water Sensor works with Alexa and Google Assistant for voice-based status checks. For enhanced protection, pair the sensor with other Govee smart devices to create automated responses. For example, you can set up a routine that flashes your Govee smart lights red when a leak is detected, providing a visual alarm in addition to phone notifications and the sensor's built-in audible alert.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the sensor fails to connect during setup, verify the LED is flashing in pairing mode and that your phone is on a 2.4GHz network. If notifications are not arriving, check that push notifications are enabled in both the Govee Home app settings and your phone's notification settings for the app. If the sensor triggers false alerts, ensure it is not placed near condensation sources or on a surface where normal moisture might collect. A dry, flat floor surface in the area you want to monitor provides the most reliable detection.
