What's in the Box
The Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro is the flagship smart home hub from Hubitat, featuring enhanced processing power and expanded radio capabilities. Inside the box, you'll find the C-8 Pro hub unit, a power adapter, an Ethernet cable, and a quick start guide. The C-8 Pro includes built-in Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Matter radios, allowing you to control a wide range of smart home devices locally without relying on cloud services.
Prerequisites
Before setting up your Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro, ensure you have:
- A router with an available Ethernet port and internet access
- A computer, phone, or tablet with a web browser on the same network
- A Hubitat account (you can create one during setup at my.hubitat.com)
- Smart devices you plan to pair, reset to factory defaults if they were previously connected to another hub
Step-by-Step Setup
- Place the C-8 Pro in a central location in your home, elevated and away from large metal objects, Wi-Fi routers, and other sources of wireless interference. Central placement maximizes Zigbee and Z-Wave range.
- Connect the Ethernet cable from your router to the hub's Ethernet port. The C-8 Pro requires a wired connection and does not have Wi-Fi.
- Plug in the power adapter and connect it to the hub. Wait for the LED on the bottom of the hub to turn green, indicating the hub has fully booted and is connected to the network. This takes about one to two minutes.
- On your browser, go to http://find.hubitat.com. This tool will detect your hub on the network and display a link to its local web interface. Click the link to open the Hubitat web UI.
- Register or log in with your Hubitat account. Follow the setup wizard to configure your hub name, location, and time zone. The wizard will also check for and install any available firmware updates.
- Once the initial setup is complete, you'll be taken to the hub's main dashboard where you can begin adding devices and creating automations.
Adding Devices via the Hubitat Web Interface
All device management on Hubitat is handled through the local web interface — there's no required mobile app, though Hubitat does offer an optional app for remote access. To add a device, click Devices in the left menu, then Add Device. Select the protocol (Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter), and the hub will enter discovery mode. Put your smart device in pairing mode and it should appear within a minute. The C-8 Pro supports Zigbee 3.0, Z-Wave Long Range (for extended coverage), and Matter for newer devices.
Smart Home Integration Tips
- Hubitat processes all automations locally, which means your devices continue to work even if your internet goes down. Take advantage of this by creating time-critical automations like motion-activated lights using the built-in Rule Machine or Simple Automation Rules apps.
- The C-8 Pro's Matter support allows it to act as a Matter bridge, exposing your Zigbee and Z-Wave devices to other Matter-compatible ecosystems like Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa.
- For remote access, enable the Hubitat Cloud Dashboard or set up a VPN to access the local web interface from outside your home.
- Build your Z-Wave and Zigbee mesh networks by starting with mains-powered devices near the hub and working outward. A strong mesh prevents device disconnections.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the hub is not found at find.hubitat.com, verify the Ethernet cable is securely connected and check your router for the hub's IP address. If the LED stays red, the hub may not have internet access — check your router's settings. For slow performance after initial setup, allow the hub 24 hours to build and optimize its Zigbee and Z-Wave mesh routing tables. If a firmware update fails, do not unplug the hub — wait for it to recover and retry from the Settings menu.
