What's in the Box
The IKEA PARASOLL Door/Window Sensor comes with two pieces — the sensor unit and a matching magnet — along with adhesive strips for both components and a quick start guide. When the two pieces are separated (the door or window opens), the sensor detects the change and sends a signal to your IKEA Dirigera hub. The PARASOLL uses the newer Thread protocol with Matter support, making it one of IKEA's most modern and responsive sensors. It is powered by a single CR2032 coin cell battery that is pre-installed.
Prerequisites
Before installing the PARASOLL, confirm you have:
- An IKEA Dirigera hub — the PARASOLL requires the Dirigera and is not compatible with the older TRADFRI Gateway due to its Thread protocol
- The IKEA Home Smart app (version 1.20 or later) installed and signed in on your smartphone
- At least one IKEA smart device already paired to trigger when the sensor activates, such as smart bulbs, plugs, or blinds
- A door or window where you want to monitor open/close status — the sensor works on standard hinged doors, sliding doors, and most window types
Step-by-Step Setup
- Activate the battery. Pull out the plastic battery isolation tab from the sensor unit to power it on. The CR2032 battery is pre-installed, so no additional battery installation is needed.
- Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Tap the "+" icon on the home screen to add a new device. Select "Sensor" from the device categories.
- Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the small pairing button on the sensor for about 10 seconds. A tiny LED will start pulsing, indicating the sensor is broadcasting its Thread signal and ready for pairing.
- Complete pairing. The app should detect the PARASOLL within a few seconds. Tap to confirm the connection, assign a name like "Front Door Sensor," and place it in the appropriate room.
- Configure automations. In the app, set up what should happen when the door or window is opened. Common automations include turning on a hallway light, sending a notification, or activating a scene. You can also configure actions for when the door is closed.
- Mount the sensor and magnet. Clean both surfaces thoroughly with a dry cloth. Attach the adhesive strips to the back of the sensor unit and the magnet. Place the sensor on the door or window frame (the non-moving part) and the magnet directly opposite on the door or window itself (the moving part). The two pieces must be within 10mm of each other when the door or window is closed for accurate detection. Press firmly and allow the adhesive to bond for at least 30 seconds.
Smart Home Integration Tips
Because the PARASOLL uses Thread with Matter support, it is one of the most integration-friendly sensors in IKEA's lineup. Through the Dirigera hub's Matter bridge, the sensor's open/close status can be exposed to Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. This means you can create native automations in those platforms — for example, an Apple Home automation that turns on the porch light whenever the front door opens after sunset. Thread's mesh networking also provides excellent range and reliability, as each Thread device strengthens the network. Home Assistant users can access the sensor through the Dirigera integration for even more advanced automation possibilities, such as triggering alerts, locking smart locks, or starting timers when doors are left open.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the sensor does not detect open/close events reliably, first check the alignment — the magnet must be directly adjacent to the sensor unit when the door is closed, with no more than a 10mm gap. If the adhesive has shifted, reposition the pieces. For connectivity issues, replace the CR2032 battery and re-pair the sensor. Since the PARASOLL uses Thread rather than Zigbee, it benefits from having other Thread devices nearby (such as IKEA Thread-enabled bulbs) to form a stronger mesh network. Factory reset the sensor by holding the pairing button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then pair again through the IKEA Home Smart app.
