Identifying the Issue
If your IKEA PARASOLL Door/Window Sensor is not detecting when a door or window opens and closes, you may notice that the IKEA Home Smart app shows a stale or incorrect status, automations triggered by the sensor do not fire, or the sensor does not appear in the app at all. The PARASOLL is a Thread-enabled sensor that reports open and closed states to the IKEA Dirigera hub, enabling automations like turning on lights when a door opens.
Common Causes
- Magnet misalignment — The PARASOLL uses a two-piece design with a sensor and a magnet. If the magnet is too far from the sensor or has shifted position, the sensor cannot detect the door or window state accurately
- Dead battery — The sensor runs on a coin cell battery, and a depleted battery will stop it from communicating entirely
- Thread network issues — The PARASOLL communicates over Thread, so it needs a healthy Thread mesh with the Dirigera hub and ideally other Thread router devices like the TRETAKT plug
- Pairing lost — A hub reset, firmware update, or Thread network change can cause the sensor to lose its connection
- Firmware out of date — Early PARASOLL firmware versions had Thread connectivity bugs that IKEA has since patched
Step-by-Step Fixes
- Check magnet alignment. Verify that the smaller magnet piece is positioned within approximately 10 millimeters of the sensor body when the door or window is closed. If the gap is too large, the sensor will always read as "open." Reposition or remount the magnet closer to the sensor using the included adhesive.
- Replace the battery. Open the sensor housing and swap in a fresh coin cell battery (check your model for the exact size — most PARASOLL units use a CR2032 or CR1632). Even if the battery is relatively new, a defective cell can cause early failure.
- Factory reset the sensor. Press and hold the small pairing button on the sensor for at least 10 seconds. The LED will flash to confirm the reset. This clears previous pairing information and prepares the device for a fresh connection.
- Re-pair to the Dirigera hub. Open the IKEA Home Smart app, tap +, and select Sensors. Press the pairing button on the PARASOLL once to enter discovery mode. The app will detect the sensor over Thread and complete the pairing.
- Rebuild automations. If you had automations based on the sensor, you may need to recreate or reassign them after re-pairing. Check the automations section in the IKEA Home Smart app to ensure the PARASOLL is still the trigger device.
- Update firmware. After pairing, check the sensor's settings in the app for available firmware updates. Install any updates, as IKEA has released patches that significantly improve Thread stability for the PARASOLL.
When to Contact Support
If the sensor's LED does not respond during a factory reset with a fresh battery, or if the sensor consistently shows the wrong state despite correct magnet alignment, the device may be defective. Contact IKEA customer support for a warranty replacement. Bring the sensor to your local IKEA store for the fastest resolution if possible.
Prevention Tips
Use strong adhesive or screws to mount the sensor and magnet so they do not shift over time from repeated door or window use. Keep the battery fresh — set a calendar reminder to check it annually. Strengthen your Thread mesh by keeping powered Thread devices like the TRETAKT plug active, especially near the sensor's location. Avoid mounting the sensor on metal door frames without a spacer, as metal can interfere with Thread signal propagation. Regularly update firmware on all IKEA smart home devices to benefit from ongoing stability improvements.
