Common Causes
- Battery is depleted or the sensor has lost power
- The magnet and sensor body are misaligned or the gap is too wide
- The sensor is out of Zigbee range from the Aqara hub
- The sensor has been removed from the hub and needs re-pairing
- The hub is offline, preventing status reports from reaching the app
- The P2 sensor's additional features (tilt detection, tamper alarm) need configuration
Fix 1: Check the Sensor and Magnet Position
The Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 uses a magnetic reed switch to detect whether a door or window is open or closed. Correct positioning is essential.
- Close the door or window and examine the gap between the sensor and its magnet. The gap should be no more than 20mm (about 3/4 inch) when fully closed.
- The alignment marks on the sensor and magnet should face each other directly. If either piece has shifted, remove it, clean the surface, and reattach it with fresh mounting tape.
- On doors with significant movement or vibration (such as a heavy exterior door), consider using screws instead of adhesive to prevent shifting over time.
- After repositioning, open and close the door multiple times and confirm the status updates correctly in the Aqara Home app.
Fix 2: Replace the Battery
- The P2 uses a CR123A battery, which provides a longer life than the CR1632 used in the original model.
- Open the battery compartment on the sensor body by sliding or twisting the cover (refer to the P2's quick start guide for the specific opening mechanism).
- Replace the battery, ensuring correct polarity. The sensor's LED should blink once when the battery is inserted.
- Reseal the battery compartment and test the sensor by opening and closing the door.
Fix 3: Restart and Verify the Hub
- Open the Aqara Home app and check your Aqara hub's status. If it shows offline, all connected sensors will stop reporting.
- Unplug the hub for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 1 to 2 minutes for it to fully restart.
- After the hub comes online, check whether the door sensor automatically reconnects and begins reporting its status.
- If the hub is online but the sensor remains offline, proceed to re-pairing.
Fix 4: Re-Pair the Sensor
- Remove the sensor from the Aqara Home app by going to its device page, tapping Settings, and selecting Remove Device.
- On the sensor, press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly.
- In the app, tap + to add a new accessory and select the Door and Window Sensor P2.
- Keep the sensor within 1 to 2 meters of the hub while pairing for the strongest signal.
- Once paired, assign it to the correct room and test the open/closed detection.
- Rebuild any automations that were linked to the sensor.
Fix 5: Configure P2-Specific Features
The Door and Window Sensor P2 has additional features beyond basic open/close detection that may need configuration:
- Tilt detection — The P2 can detect the tilt angle of the surface it is mounted on, useful for awning windows or tilt-and-turn windows. Enable this in the sensor's settings if you need tilt-based automations.
- Tamper alarm — The P2 can alert you if someone removes the sensor from its mounting surface. Enable this feature in the settings for added security.
- Open duration alert — Set a timer to receive a notification if a door or window remains open longer than a specified period. This is useful for exterior doors or freezer doors.
Fix 6: Strengthen the Zigbee Connection
If the sensor works intermittently or goes offline periodically, the Zigbee signal may be unreliable at that location.
- Check the distance between the sensor and the nearest Zigbee repeater device or the hub itself.
- Add a mains-powered Zigbee device (such as an Aqara Smart Plug or wired switch) between the hub and the sensor to extend the mesh network.
- Restart the hub after adding new devices to allow the Zigbee mesh to restructure.
- Avoid placing the sensor inside metal door frames or behind thick metal fire doors, as these materials severely attenuate Zigbee signals.
Fix 7: Update Firmware
- Open the Aqara Home app and check both the hub and the sensor for firmware updates.
- Install any available updates. Hub firmware must be updated first, as Zigbee device firmware is delivered through the hub.
- After updating, verify that the sensor reports correctly.
When to Contact Support
If the sensor does not power on after a battery replacement and does not enter pairing mode after a factory reset, the sensor may be defective. Contact Aqara Support with the model number and serial number for warranty service.
