What's in the Box

The IKEA RODRET Dimmer package includes the compact two-button dimmer, a magnetic wall-mount plate with adhesive backing, and a quick start guide. The RODRET is one of IKEA's simplest smart home controllers — a small, minimalist device with just two buttons for on/off and brightness control. It uses the Zigbee protocol to communicate with the IKEA Dirigera hub or the older TRADFRI Gateway and is powered by a single CR2032 coin cell battery that is pre-installed.

Prerequisites

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • An IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway, already connected to your network and configured
  • The IKEA Home Smart app installed on your smartphone or tablet
  • At least one IKEA smart bulb or smart device paired to your hub that you want to control with the dimmer
  • A location in mind for mounting — the RODRET's small size makes it ideal for wall mounting next to doorways, beside beds, or on furniture

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Activate the battery. Turn the RODRET over and pull out the plastic battery isolation tab. The pre-installed CR2032 battery will activate, and you may see a brief flash from the front LED.
  2. Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Tap the "+" icon on the home screen to add a new device. Choose "Remote or controller" from the device categories.
  3. Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the pairing button on the back of the RODRET for approximately 10 seconds. The front LED will start pulsing steadily, indicating the dimmer is broadcasting its Zigbee signal and ready for pairing.
  4. Complete pairing in the app. When the RODRET appears in the IKEA Home Smart app, tap it to confirm the connection. Name it something descriptive like "Hallway Dimmer" and assign it to the appropriate room.
  5. Assign lights to control. In the dimmer's settings within the app, select which bulbs or light groups the RODRET should operate. You can assign it to a single bulb for bedside control or an entire room of lights for one-touch management.
  6. Mount the dimmer. Peel off the adhesive backing on the magnetic mount plate and press it firmly to your chosen surface. After allowing 30 seconds for the adhesive to set, snap the RODRET magnetically onto the plate. The dimmer is small enough to be unobtrusive on almost any surface.

Using the RODRET

The RODRET has two buttons — a larger top button and a smaller bottom button. Press the top button once to turn on the assigned lights, and press the bottom button once to turn them off. To adjust brightness, press and hold the top button to gradually increase brightness or press and hold the bottom button to gradually dim the lights. Release the button when you reach your desired level. The interaction is smooth and intuitive, making the RODRET a great choice for bedrooms and living spaces where you want simple, reliable control.

Smart Home Integration Tips

As a Zigbee input device, the RODRET itself does not appear in Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa. However, the lights it controls are fully accessible through those platforms via the Dirigera hub's Matter bridge. You can freely use both the RODRET and voice commands to control the same lights without any conflicts. For Home Assistant users, the RODRET's button events can be captured through Zigbee2MQTT, opening up possibilities for custom automations — such as mapping the top button to activate a scene during the evening or triggering different actions depending on whether you press or long-press.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the RODRET stops responding, the most likely culprit is a depleted CR2032 battery. Slide off the back cover and replace the battery, making sure the positive side faces up. If a fresh battery does not resolve the issue, factory reset the dimmer by pressing and holding the pairing button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then re-pair it through the IKEA Home Smart app. Ensure the RODRET is positioned within reasonable Zigbee range of your hub or nearby powered Zigbee devices like smart bulbs, which act as signal repeaters in the mesh network. If brightness adjustment feels unresponsive, check for a firmware update in the app's device settings.
