What's in the Box
The IKEA SOMRIG Shortcut Button package includes the shortcut button itself, a CR2032 coin cell battery (pre-installed), an adhesive mounting plate, and a quick start guide. The SOMRIG is a compact, two-button device that uses the Thread wireless protocol, making it one of IKEA's newer Matter-ready smart home accessories. You will need an IKEA Dirigera hub to use this device — it is not compatible with the older TRADFRI gateway.
Prerequisites
- An IKEA Dirigera hub already set up and connected to your home Wi-Fi network
- The IKEA Home Smart app installed on your iOS or Android device (version 1.20 or later recommended)
- The Dirigera hub should have the latest firmware — check for updates in the IKEA Home Smart app under Settings before adding new devices
- At least one IKEA smart home device (such as a bulb, plug, or blind) already paired to the hub, since the SOMRIG is designed to control other devices
Step-by-Step Setup
- Activate the battery. Remove the SOMRIG from its packaging and pull the plastic battery tab to activate the pre-installed CR2032 battery. A small LED on the front of the button will flash briefly to confirm it has power.
- Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Navigate to the home screen and tap the + icon to add a new device. Select Shortcut buttons from the device category list.
- Put the SOMRIG in pairing mode. Press and hold the small pairing button on the back of the device for about 10 seconds. The front LED will begin pulsing steadily, indicating the button is ready to be discovered by your Dirigera hub.
- Wait for discovery. The IKEA Home Smart app will scan for the device over Thread. Once detected, the SOMRIG will appear on screen. Tap to confirm the pairing. This process usually takes 15 to 30 seconds.
- Name the button and assign a room. Give the SOMRIG a descriptive name like "Bedroom Button" and assign it to the appropriate room in the app.
- Configure button actions. The SOMRIG has two physical buttons — the dot and the dash. In the app, tap on the SOMRIG and assign actions to each button. You can set a single press to toggle a light, trigger a scene, or control a group of devices. Long press actions can also be configured separately for each button.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The SOMRIG Shortcut Button communicates over Thread, which means it helps extend your Thread mesh network alongside other Thread-enabled IKEA devices like the TRETAKT plug and PARASOLL sensor. Because the Dirigera hub supports Matter, your SOMRIG can indirectly participate in a broader smart home ecosystem. For example, you can create scenes in the IKEA Home Smart app that combine IKEA devices with actions exposed through Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa via the Dirigera hub's Matter bridge. Consider placing the SOMRIG near your front door to trigger a "leaving home" scene that turns off all lights and adjusts your blinds with a single press.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the SOMRIG does not appear during pairing, make sure you are within range of the Dirigera hub — ideally in the same room for initial setup. Try removing and reinserting the CR2032 battery to restart the device, then re-enter pairing mode. If the button pairs but actions do not trigger reliably, check that your Thread network has enough router devices (powered Thread devices like the TRETAKT plug act as routers). Replacing the coin cell battery can also resolve unresponsive behavior, as a low battery may cause intermittent connectivity.
