What You'll Need
- IKEA SYMFONISK Floor Lamp Speaker
- Sonos app (iOS or Android)
- Wi-Fi network
- IKEA assembly tools (usually included)
Step-by-Step Setup
- Assemble the floor lamp following the IKEA instructions. The speaker component is integrated into the lamp base. Take your time with assembly -- the pieces need to connect securely for both the lamp and speaker to work properly.
- Place the assembled lamp in your desired location. Keep it near a power outlet since the single cable powers both the lamp and the speaker.
- Plug in the power cable. Both the speaker and the lamp turn on through this connection.
- Open the Sonos app:
- Tap "Add" and select SYMFONISK
- Wait for the pairing indicator
- Follow the on-screen setup steps
- Connect to Wi-Fi. If you already have a Sonos system, the lamp speaker joins your existing network automatically.
- Assign a room name for the speaker.
Placement and Sound Tips
The SYMFONISK Floor Lamp Speaker serves double duty as both a light source and a wireless speaker. The sound radiates from the lower section of the lamp, roughly at seated ear level when the lamp is on the floor. This positioning actually works well for music listening, since the sound is right at the level where you typically sit.
Place the lamp where you would normally put a floor lamp: next to a couch, beside a reading chair, or in a corner of the room. Since the speaker is at the base, corners can boost the bass a bit. If it sounds too boomy in a corner, pull it out a foot or so.
The bamboo and textile design fits most living spaces without looking like an obvious tech gadget. The lamp shade diffuses light nicely, and the LED bulb is replaceable if it burns out.
Light and Speaker Controls
The light and speaker are controlled independently. Touch the base to toggle the lamp on and off. Music playback is controlled through the Sonos app, voice commands (if you have another smart speaker in the room), or AirPlay 2 from Apple devices.
The lamp does not have smart dimming built in, so if you want dimming you would need a smart bulb. A basic smart LED bulb from IKEA or Philips Hue fits the socket and gives you dimming and color control through their respective apps.
Multi-Room Audio
Like every SYMFONISK speaker, this lamp runs full Sonos software. Group it with other Sonos or SYMFONISK speakers for multi-room playback. It supports AirPlay 2 for streaming from Apple devices and works with over 100 music services through the Sonos app.
You can also use two SYMFONISK Floor Lamp Speakers as surround speakers for a Sonos soundbar, though this is less common given their size. A stereo pair of two lamps on either side of a couch would make for an interesting living room setup.
Troubleshooting
- Assembly issues: If the speaker does not work after assembly, double-check that all internal connections are seated properly. The speaker module connects to the power routing inside the lamp body. If a connection is loose, the speaker may not power on even though the lamp works.
- Light not working but speaker works: The LED bulb may need to be reseated in its socket, or it may have failed. Try a replacement LED bulb. Touch the base to toggle the light. The light and speaker use separate circuits, so one can work without the other.
- Sound muffled by lamp shade: The speaker fires from the lower section, not through the shade. If sound seems off, make sure nothing is placed against or on top of the speaker area at the base of the lamp.
- Not found during setup: Check that the speaker section has power (the LED should be visible). Unplug the entire lamp for 10 seconds and plug it back in, then try the Sonos app again.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the Connect button on the speaker while unplugging and re-plugging the power cable. Hold until the LED flashes, then release.
