What You'll Need
- IKEA SYMFONISK Picture Frame Speaker
- Sonos app (iOS or Android)
- Wi-Fi network
- Wall mount hardware (included) or use the built-in easel
Step-by-Step Setup
- Decide on wall mount or easel placement. If wall mounting, use the included template and hardware. Mark your drill points carefully and make sure a power outlet is within reach of the cable. If using the easel, just lean it against a wall or prop it on a shelf.
- Connect the power cable. Route the cable neatly since it will be visible. Cable clips or channels can help keep things tidy, especially with a wall mount.
- Download or open the Sonos app and sign in.
- Add the speaker:
- Tap "Add" and select SYMFONISK Picture Frame
- Wait for the LED to indicate pairing mode
- Follow the setup wizard
- Connect to Wi-Fi. If you already have a Sonos system, the speaker joins your existing network automatically.
- Assign a room for the speaker in the Sonos app.
Mounting and Placement Tips
The Picture Frame Speaker is designed to blend into your home decor, so where you hang it matters for both aesthetics and audio. Wall mounting at about ear height (when seated) gives the best sound since the drivers fire forward from behind the art panel. Mounting it too high, near the ceiling, will make the sound seem distant and thin.
In portrait or landscape orientation, the speaker sounds slightly different because of how the drivers are positioned. Experiment with both to see what you prefer. Horizontal (landscape) mounting often gives a wider perceived sound.
The magnetic front panel can be swapped for different art designs, sold separately by IKEA. Swapping is easy: gently pull the panel off and click the new one into place. This lets you change the look seasonally or to match a room update without buying a new speaker.
If you are wall mounting, plan your cable routing before drilling. Running the power cable behind the wall looks cleanest but requires some extra work. Alternatively, use a flat cable cover painted to match your wall.
Multi-Room and Surround Setup
The SYMFONISK Picture Frame runs the full Sonos platform, so it groups with any other Sonos speaker for multi-room audio. It also supports AirPlay 2, which means you can stream directly from Apple devices.
A pair of Picture Frame Speakers makes for excellent surround speakers with a Sonos soundbar. Mount them on the wall behind your couch, slightly above ear level, and add them as surrounds in the Sonos app. You get functional surround sound that looks like wall art instead of obvious speakers.
For music listening, create a stereo pair with two Picture Frame speakers. Both need to be the same generation model.
Troubleshooting
- Sound seems blocked or muffled: The front panel should not obstruct the sound under normal use, but placing anything directly against the front of the frame will reduce audio quality. Make sure nothing is leaning on or covering the speaker surface.
- Wall mount vibration or buzzing: Tighten the wall mount screws. If the wall itself vibrates at high volume, try adding small adhesive felt pads between the speaker and the wall to dampen the contact.
- Cable management: The power cable exits from the bottom of the frame. If wall mounted, route it down the wall and use cable covers. Some owners drill a small hole behind the frame to run the cable inside the wall for a clean look.
- Not discovered during setup: Check that the LED is flashing. Power cycle the speaker by unplugging it for 10 seconds. Make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Factory reset: Unplug the speaker. Press and hold the Connect button while plugging the power back in. Keep holding until the LED flashes, then release. The speaker will be ready for a fresh setup.
