What's in the Box
The IKEA SYMFONISK Sound Remote includes the rotary dial remote, a magnetic wall-mount plate with adhesive backing, and a quick start guide. Designed specifically for controlling IKEA SYMFONISK and Sonos speakers, this unique dial combines a satisfying physical rotation for volume control with a central button for play/pause. The remote communicates over Zigbee with the IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway. It is powered by a CR2032 coin cell battery that comes pre-installed and lasts approximately two years.
Prerequisites
Before you begin the setup, confirm you have:
- An IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway connected to your home network
- The IKEA Home Smart app installed and signed in on your smartphone
- An IKEA SYMFONISK speaker (bookshelf, picture frame, or table lamp model) or a Sonos speaker that has been set up in your system
- The Sonos app installed if you are using Sonos speakers, as the SYMFONISK Sound Remote integrates with the Sonos ecosystem through IKEA's hub
Step-by-Step Setup
- Activate the battery. Turn the Sound Remote over and pull out the plastic battery tab to power on the device. The CR2032 battery is pre-installed and should be ready to go.
- Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Tap the "+" icon on the home screen to add a new device. Select "Remote or controller" from the device types.
- Put the remote in pairing mode. Press and hold the pairing button on the back of the Sound Remote for about 10 seconds until the LED on the front begins pulsing. This indicates the remote is broadcasting its Zigbee signal.
- Pair through the app. The IKEA Home Smart app will detect the Sound Remote within a few seconds. Tap on it to complete pairing, then name it something like "Kitchen Speaker Remote" to keep your devices organized.
- Assign a speaker. In the Sound Remote's settings within the app, select which SYMFONISK or Sonos speaker it should control. The remote can be assigned to a single speaker or a speaker group if you have multiple Sonos/SYMFONISK devices grouped together.
- Mount the remote. Attach the adhesive mounting plate to your preferred surface — a wall beside the couch, the side of a bookshelf, or next to the speaker itself are all excellent choices. The remote magnetically snaps onto the plate, making it easy to grab and carry or leave mounted for quick access.
Using the Sound Remote
Rotate the dial clockwise to increase volume and counterclockwise to decrease it. The rotation is smooth with a subtle tactile feel that makes it easy to find the right level without looking. Press the center of the dial once to play or pause the current audio. A short press of the center button also skips to the next track in some configurations. The remote works over Zigbee, so there is no perceptible delay between turning the dial and hearing the volume change on your speaker.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The SYMFONISK Sound Remote is specifically designed for audio control, and its primary integration is through the Sonos ecosystem via the IKEA hub. If you have multiple Sonos speakers throughout your home, consider placing a Sound Remote in each room for convenient local volume control. While the remote itself does not appear in Apple Home or Google Home, the speakers it controls can be managed through those platforms independently. Home Assistant users running Zigbee2MQTT can capture the rotation and press events from the Sound Remote to create custom automations — for example, rotating the dial could control non-audio devices like light dimmers.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the Sound Remote stops controlling your speaker, replace the CR2032 battery first, as a weak battery causes intermittent connectivity. After replacing the battery, the remote should reconnect automatically. If it does not, reset it by pressing and holding the pairing button for 10 seconds and re-pair through the IKEA Home Smart app. If volume changes feel laggy, ensure the remote is within good Zigbee range of the hub and that your Sonos system is functioning properly. Occasionally the speaker assignment can drop after a hub firmware update — simply reassign the speaker in the app's remote settings to restore full control.
