What's in the Box
The IKEA TRADFRI Shortcut Button package includes the button unit, an adhesive mounting plate, and a quick start guide. This compact, single-press button is designed to trigger one specific action in your IKEA smart home with a quick tap. It uses the Zigbee protocol to communicate with the IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway. A CR2032 coin cell battery comes pre-installed, providing roughly two years of use under normal conditions.
Prerequisites
Make sure you have these items ready before setup:
- An IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway, already configured and connected to your network
- The IKEA Home Smart app installed on your iOS or Android device
- At least one IKEA smart device (bulb, plug, blind, or speaker) paired to your hub to assign as the button's action target
- A location in mind for mounting — doorways, nightstands, and desks are popular spots
Step-by-Step Setup
- Activate the battery. Turn the button over and remove the battery isolation tab by pulling it out gently. This activates the pre-installed CR2032 battery. You may see a brief LED flash on the front of the button confirming power.
- Open the IKEA Home Smart app. From the main screen, tap the "+" button to add a new device and select "Remote or controller" from the device categories.
- Put the button in pairing mode. Press and hold the small pairing button located on the back of the Shortcut Button for approximately 10 seconds. The LED indicator on the front will begin pulsing, indicating the device is discoverable.
- Pair in the app. The IKEA Home Smart app should detect the Shortcut Button within a few seconds. Tap on it to confirm the pairing and assign it a name like "Bedroom Shortcut" or "Front Door Button."
- Assign an action. This is the most important step. In the app, go to the Shortcut Button's settings and choose what happens when you press it. Options include toggling a specific light or group on/off, activating a scene you have previously created, or triggering a smart plug. Pick the action that fits your daily routine.
- Mount the button. Peel the adhesive backing from the mounting plate and press it firmly against your chosen surface. Wait at least 30 seconds for the adhesive to bond. The button attaches magnetically to the plate, so it can be easily removed and carried if needed.
Practical Use Cases
The Shortcut Button is incredibly versatile despite its simplicity. Place one by the front door to trigger a "Leaving Home" scene that turns off all lights. Put another on your nightstand to activate a "Goodnight" scene that dims the bedroom and turns off everything else. You can also use it in the kitchen to toggle a smart plug controlling a coffee maker. Because it communicates over Zigbee and does not rely on Wi-Fi or cloud connectivity, the button responds almost instantly.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The Shortcut Button is an input-only device, so it will not appear as a controllable accessory in Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa. However, the scenes and devices it triggers are fully accessible in those ecosystems through the Dirigera hub's Matter integration. For advanced users running Home Assistant, the button press event can be captured through the Dirigera integration or via Zigbee2MQTT, enabling you to build custom automations far beyond what the IKEA app supports — for example, a single press could toggle lights while a long press activates a completely different routine.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the Shortcut Button does not trigger its assigned action, check the battery first by opening the back cover and ensuring the CR2032 is properly seated with the positive side facing up. If the battery is fine, verify that the target device or scene still exists in the IKEA Home Smart app, as deleting a scene will break the button's assignment. To factory reset the button, press and hold the pairing button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then re-pair it through the app. If the adhesive mount loses its grip, clean the surface with rubbing alcohol and use a fresh adhesive strip or a small piece of double-sided mounting tape.
