What's in the Box
Your iRobot Roomba j7+ package includes: the Roomba j7+ robot vacuum, the Clean Base Auto-Empty Station, a power cord, a replacement side brush, an auto-empty bag, and the quick start guide. Check that everything is present and in good condition before beginning the setup process.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network and the password
- The iRobot Home app installed on your iOS or Android device
- A flat area against a wall for the Clean Base, with at least 1.5 feet of clearance on each side and 4 feet of open space in front
- Floors picked up and cleared of cables, shoes, pet toys, and small objects for the initial mapping run
Step-by-Step Setup
- Set up the Clean Base Auto-Empty Station: Position the Clean Base against a wall on a hard, level floor. Connect the power cord and plug it in. The status light should turn green. Open the lid and install an auto-empty bag by pressing it into the compartment until it clicks securely.
- Unbox and prepare the Roomba j7+: Remove all packaging materials, protective films, and tape from the robot. Flip the unit over and install the side brush by pressing it onto the mounting spindle. The Roomba j7+ is a vacuum-only model, so there is no mopping pad or water tank to set up.
- Charge the robot: Place the Roomba j7+ on the Clean Base to begin its initial charge. The light ring on the robot will pulse while charging. Wait for a full charge, which takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, before starting the first cleaning session.
- Connect to the iRobot Home app: Open the iRobot Home app and sign in or register for a new account. Tap "+" to add a device and choose "Roomba j7+" from the list. Follow the app's prompts to pair the robot with your WiFi network. When instructed, press and hold the Home and Spot Clean buttons on the robot simultaneously until you hear a pairing tone.
- Run the initial mapping session: Start a mapping run from the iRobot Home app. The Roomba j7+ uses PrecisionVision Navigation with its front-facing camera to map your home and identify obstacles like shoes, cords, and pet waste. Keep all interior doors open and lights on for the most accurate map. The j7+ may take multiple runs to fully map a larger home.
- Customize your smart map: After mapping, the iRobot Home app will show your floor plan with auto-detected rooms. Rename rooms, adjust boundaries, set per-room suction preferences, and create keep-out zones for areas you want the robot to avoid. Set up cleaning schedules based on your daily routine.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The Roomba j7+ integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT for smart home automation. Link your iRobot account through the Alexa or Google Home app to enable voice control. You can say "Alexa, ask Roomba to clean the bedroom" or "Hey Google, tell Roomba to go home." With IFTTT, create custom automations — for example, trigger a cleaning session when your Nest thermostat detects you've left for work. The iRobot Home app also offers smart suggestions powered by iRobot OS, including recommended cleaning schedules based on pet shedding seasons, high-pollen days, and your household activity patterns.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the Roomba j7+ won't connect during pairing, confirm your phone is on a 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Reset the WiFi by pressing and holding the Home and Spot Clean buttons for 20 seconds until the light ring turns white. If the Clean Base isn't emptying the robot, ensure the auto-empty bag is installed correctly and not full, and clean the evacuation port on the bottom of the robot. If the robot is avoiding areas it shouldn't, check the keep-out zones in the iRobot Home app to make sure they're correctly placed. Update the firmware through the app after setup to get the latest obstacle recognition and navigation improvements.
