Step-by-Step Setup

  3. Download the Google Home app and sign in with your Google account.
  4. Add the device:
    • Tap "+" then "Set up device" then "New device"
    • Select your home
    • The app will search for and find the speaker nearby
  5. Connect to your Wi-Fi network when prompted and enter the password.
  6. Assign a room and configure your Google Assistant preferences, including Voice Match for personalized results.

Placement and Sound Tips

The JBL Link Portable delivers 360-degree sound from a cylindrical body, so it sounds best positioned in the middle of a surface rather than pushed against a wall. A kitchen counter, desk, or nightstand all work well. The speaker is compact enough to carry from room to room, which is one of its main strengths.

With an IPX7 waterproof rating, the Link Portable handles rain, splashes, and even a quick dunk in water. This makes it a good pick for the bathroom, poolside, or outdoor cooking area. Just do not charge it while it is wet -- let the USB-C port dry out first.

The wireless charging dock that comes in the box is the most convenient way to keep it topped up. Set the dock on a counter and just drop the speaker on it when you are done. No fumbling with cables.

Wi-Fi vs. Bluetooth

At home on Wi-Fi, the Link Portable is a full Google Assistant speaker. It responds to "Hey Google" commands, controls smart home devices, and joins multi-room groups with other Chromecast speakers. Take it off the dock and leave Wi-Fi range, and it switches to Bluetooth for direct streaming from your phone.

Google Assistant features only work on Wi-Fi. In Bluetooth mode, you still get great sound and playback controls, but no voice assistant, multi-room, or Chromecast functionality.

Multi-Room Audio

Create a speaker group in the Google Home app by tapping "+" and selecting "Create speaker group." Add the Link Portable along with any other Google-compatible speakers. Say "Hey Google, play music on [group name]" and everything plays together. You can also broadcast messages to all speakers in your home by saying "Hey Google, broadcast dinner is ready."

Troubleshooting

  • Bluetooth mode: Press the Bluetooth button to disconnect from Wi-Fi and enter Bluetooth pairing mode. Select the speaker from your phone's Bluetooth settings. When you bring it back within Wi-Fi range, it should reconnect to your network automatically.
  • Not charging on the dock: Make sure the speaker is seated properly on the charging dock. The alignment needs to be correct for the wireless charging contacts. If it still will not charge, try plugging in a USB-C cable directly.
  • Google Assistant not responding: Confirm that the speaker is connected to Wi-Fi (the LED indicators show the connection status). If the microphone is muted, tap the mute button on top to re-enable it.
  • Audio drops or stutters on Wi-Fi: Move the speaker closer to your router or into a spot with stronger signal. Interference from other devices on the same Wi-Fi channel can also cause issues. Switching your router to a less congested channel may help.
  • Factory reset: Press and hold the Play/Pause button and Volume Up button simultaneously for about 10 seconds until you hear a tone or the LED ring flashes. The speaker will reset to factory settings.
