What's in the Box
Your LIFX Lightstrip 1m Extension includes a one-meter LED strip segment and a connector that attaches to an existing LIFX Lightstrip or another extension. The extension does not include a power supply or controller module, as it draws power and WiFi connectivity from the starter kit it connects to. Each extension adds additional addressable color zones to your setup. You can chain multiple extensions to cover longer surfaces, up to the maximum supported length.
Prerequisites
You must already have a LIFX Lightstrip 2m Starter Kit installed and set up before adding an extension. The extension connects to the end of the existing strip and shares its power supply and WiFi connection. Before purchasing, verify that your starter kit's power adapter can handle the additional length. LIFX recommends a maximum total length including extensions. Plan your extended layout and measure the surface to confirm where the additional one meter will be placed. Have the surface clean and dry for adhesive mounting.
Step-by-Step Setup
- Unplug the power adapter from your existing LIFX Lightstrip before connecting the extension. This prevents any electrical issues during connection.
- Locate the connector port at the end of your existing strip or the last extension in the chain.
- Align the extension's connector with the port, ensuring the pins match up correctly. Press firmly until the connector clicks or seats fully. Do not force it at an angle.
- Clean the surface where the extension will be mounted using isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry completely.
- Peel the adhesive backing gradually and press the extension strip onto the surface, continuing from where the existing strip ends. Work slowly for a clean, straight line.
- Use mounting clips at any bends or corners where the adhesive alone may not hold the strip securely.
- Plug the power adapter back in. The extension should illuminate along with the rest of the strip.
- Open the LIFX app. The extension's zones should automatically appear as additional zones on the existing strip's controls. No separate pairing is needed.
- Test the extended zones by using the "Paint" feature to assign colors across the full length, including the new section.
Maximizing Your Extended Strip
With the extension added, you now have a longer strip with more addressable color zones. This opens up creative possibilities like full perimeter lighting behind a TV, extended under-cabinet runs in larger kitchens, or wrapping around bookshelves and display cases. In the LIFX app, use the "Morph" effect across the full strip for a flowing ambient light that moves through the extended length. The "Move" effect creates a chasing pattern that looks especially impressive on longer strips. You can also create gradient scenes that transition from one color at the start to a different color at the extension's end.
Smart Home Integration Tips
Since the extension connects to an existing starter kit, it inherits all smart home integrations already configured. Your Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit setup will control the entire strip including extensions as a single device. No additional linking or configuration is needed. If you've set up IFTTT applets or SmartThings automations for the strip, those will automatically include the extended zones. The additional length makes the strip even more impactful in voice-activated scenes like "Alexa, set the TV lights to movie mode."
Quick Troubleshooting
If the extension doesn't light up after connecting, unplug the power adapter again and reseat the connector, making sure the pins are fully engaged. Check that the connector isn't dirty or bent. If only the extension stays dark while the starter strip works, the connector may be damaged or the extension itself may be defective. If the extension lights up but doesn't appear as additional zones in the LIFX app, check for firmware updates on the starter strip. Some older firmware versions may not recognize extensions until updated. If the adhesive on the extension doesn't hold well, supplement with mounting clips or high-quality double-sided tape rated for the weight of LED strips.
