What's in the Box

Your LIFX Lightstrip 2m Starter Kit includes a two-meter LED light strip with an integrated controller, a power adapter, mounting clips, adhesive tape pre-applied to the back of the strip, and a quick-start card. The strip features eight individually addressable color zones, allowing different sections to display different colors simultaneously. No hub is required as the strip connects directly to your WiFi network. The controller module at one end houses the WiFi radio and connects to the power adapter.

Prerequisites

Plan where you'll mount the strip before peeling off the adhesive backing, as repositioning can weaken the adhesive. Common locations include under kitchen cabinets, behind TV screens, along bookshelves, or under bed frames. The surface should be clean, dry, and smooth for the best adhesion. You'll need access to a power outlet near the installation location. Ensure your WiFi broadcasts on 2.4GHz, and download the LIFX app with an account ready. Measure your intended surface to confirm the two-meter length is sufficient, or plan to add LIFX Lightstrip extensions for longer runs.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Clean the mounting surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol or a degreaser to remove dust and oils. Allow it to dry completely for the strongest adhesive bond.
  2. Plan the strip layout starting from the power adapter end. The controller must be positioned where it can reach a power outlet.
  3. Peel back a few inches of the adhesive backing at a time as you press the strip firmly onto the surface. Work slowly to avoid air bubbles and crooked alignment. Use the included mounting clips at corners or curves where adhesive alone may not hold.
  4. Plug the power adapter into a wall outlet and connect it to the strip's controller module.
  5. The strip will power on and enter pairing mode, cycling through colors to indicate it's ready for setup.
  6. Open the LIFX app and tap "Add Device" or the "+" button.
  7. Select the Lightstrip from the discovered devices list and enter your 2.4GHz WiFi credentials.
  8. Name the strip descriptively, such as "TV Backlight" or "Kitchen Under Cabinet," and assign it to a room.
  9. Test the multi-zone effects by selecting "Paint" to assign different colors to different zones, or "Morph" for flowing color transitions.

Multi-Zone Effects and Scenes

The eight addressable zones make the LIFX Lightstrip far more versatile than single-color LED strips. In the LIFX app, the "Paint" feature lets you assign a specific color to each zone, creating rainbow effects, gradient transitions, or alternating color patterns. The "Morph" effect creates a slow, mesmerizing color flow between zones. The "Move" effect shifts a color pattern along the strip. Save your favorite combinations as scenes for one-tap activation. For TV backlighting, try a subtle warm white across all zones at low brightness to reduce eye strain during viewing. For parties, use the "Strobe" or color cycling effects at full brightness.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The LIFX Lightstrip works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. Voice commands let you control color, brightness, and effects hands-free. Link your LIFX account in your voice assistant's app and say "Alexa, set the TV backlight to blue" or "Hey Google, turn on the kitchen under-cabinet lights." For HomeKit automations, include the strip in scenes like "Movie Time" that dim overhead lights and activate a soft warm strip behind the TV. LIFX also integrates with IFTTT and Razer Chroma for gamers who want their lighting to react to in-game events.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the strip doesn't enter pairing mode, unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and reconnect. If the LIFX app can't find it, verify your phone is on 2.4GHz WiFi. To factory reset the strip, rapidly unplug and replug the power five times. If the adhesive fails, clean both the surface and strip backing with alcohol, and use fresh double-sided mounting tape or additional clips. If individual zones display incorrect colors, check for firmware updates in the LIFX app. If you notice dimming at the far end of the strip, this is normal for LED strips and can be minimized by keeping total strip length within manufacturer recommendations.
