What's in the Box
Your Lutron Caseta Smart Hub package includes the Caseta Smart Bridge (also referred to as the hub), an Ethernet cable, a USB power adapter with cable, and a quick start guide. Some starter kits also bundle a Pico remote and an in-wall dimmer or switch, giving you everything needed to control one room right out of the box.
Prerequisites
Before you begin setup, make sure you have the following ready:
- A working Wi-Fi router with an available Ethernet port
- A smartphone or tablet running iOS 12+ or Android 5.0+
- The Lutron Caseta app downloaded from the App Store or Google Play
- A Lutron account (you can create one during the setup process)
The Caseta Smart Bridge connects to your router via Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi, which provides a more stable and reliable connection. Plan to place the bridge within cable reach of your router.
Step-by-Step Setup
- Connect one end of the included Ethernet cable to the back of the Smart Bridge and the other end to an open port on your Wi-Fi router.
- Plug the USB power cable into the Smart Bridge and connect the adapter to a nearby outlet. The LED lights on the bridge will begin blinking as it powers on.
- Wait approximately 60 seconds for the bridge to fully boot. Two green LEDs on the front of the unit should illuminate and remain steady, indicating the bridge is connected to your network and ready for pairing.
- Open the Lutron Caseta app on your phone and tap "Set Up My System" or "Add a Bridge" if you already have an account.
- The app will search for the bridge on your local network. When it appears, tap it to begin the linking process.
- Press the small button on the back of the bridge when prompted by the app. This confirms the physical pairing between your phone and the bridge.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to name your bridge and assign it to your home. The app may also install a firmware update during initial setup, which can take several minutes.
App Pairing and Room Configuration
Once the bridge is set up, the Lutron Caseta app walks you through adding your first device. Tap "Add Device" and select the type of Caseta product you want to pair, such as a dimmer, switch, plug, or Pico remote. The bridge communicates with all Caseta devices using Lutron's proprietary Clear Connect RF protocol, which operates on a dedicated frequency separate from your Wi-Fi network. This means Caseta devices won't compete with other wireless traffic in your home and maintain reliable range up to 30 feet through walls.
Organize devices into rooms within the app so you can control groups of lights with a single tap. You can also create scenes and schedules, such as an "Away" mode that randomly activates lights while you're on vacation.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The Caseta Smart Bridge supports Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Sonos out of the box. To enable voice assistants, open the respective assistant app and search for the Lutron skill or integration. Once linked, all devices paired to your Caseta bridge will appear in the assistant's device list. For HomeKit users, the pairing code is printed on the bottom of the bridge.
If you plan to expand beyond 75 devices, consider upgrading to the Caseta Smart Bridge Pro, which also supports Serena shades integration and third-party systems like Control4 and Crestron via Telnet.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the app cannot find the bridge during setup, verify that your phone is connected to the same network as the bridge's router. Restart your router and the bridge by unplugging them for 10 seconds each. If only one LED appears on the bridge, the Ethernet connection may not be seated properly. Try a different Ethernet port or cable. For persistent issues, perform a factory reset by pressing and holding the reset button on the bottom of the bridge for 10 seconds until the LEDs flash rapidly.
