What's in the Box

Your Nanoleaf Essentials A19 Smart Bulb package includes the A19 LED smart bulb and a quick start guide. The bulb features a standard E26 screw base compatible with most North American light fixtures. It produces up to 806 lumens of brightness with full RGBWW color support, meaning it can display over 16 million colors as well as tunable white from warm (2700K) to cool daylight (6500K). The Nanoleaf Essentials line uses Thread and Bluetooth for connectivity, with Matter support for seamless smart home integration.

Prerequisites

Before setting up the bulb, make sure you have:

  • A light fixture with an E26 socket controlled by a switch in the "on" position
  • The Nanoleaf app installed on your iPhone or Android device
  • A Thread border router for best performance (Apple HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K 2nd gen or later, or a compatible Matter/Thread border router)
  • A Bluetooth connection on your phone for initial pairing

The Nanoleaf Essentials A19 bulb connects via Bluetooth for initial setup and then communicates over Thread for ongoing control. Thread is a low-power mesh networking protocol that provides faster response times and greater reliability than Bluetooth alone. If you do not have a Thread border router, the bulb will still work over Bluetooth with reduced range and response speed.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Screw the Nanoleaf Essentials A19 bulb into your light fixture. Make sure the wall switch is turned on so the bulb receives power.
  2. The bulb will begin pulsing or cycling through colors when first powered on, indicating it is in pairing mode and ready for setup.
  3. Open the Nanoleaf app on your phone and tap the "+" icon or "Add Device" to begin adding a new product.
  4. Select "Essentials Bulb" from the list of devices. The app will use Bluetooth to scan for nearby bulbs in pairing mode.
  5. When the bulb appears in the app, tap it to begin pairing. The app will connect to the bulb and may install a firmware update. Allow this to complete without interruption.
  6. Name the bulb and assign it to a room. You can now control brightness, color, and color temperature from the Nanoleaf app.

App Pairing and Features

The Nanoleaf app provides extensive control over the A19 bulb, including color wheel selection, pre-built lighting scenes, circadian rhythm scheduling, and music sync capabilities. The app also allows you to group multiple Essentials bulbs together for synchronized color effects. If you have a Thread border router on your network, the bulb will automatically connect to the Thread mesh, improving responsiveness and allowing control even when Bluetooth range is exceeded.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Nanoleaf Essentials A19 works natively with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. For Apple users, adding the bulb via the Home app using the Matter or HomeKit setup code on the bulb or its packaging provides direct Siri control. For Alexa and Google, enable the Nanoleaf skill or link the Nanoleaf app in the assistant's settings. With Matter support, you can pair the bulb to multiple ecosystems simultaneously, allowing every household member to use their preferred voice assistant.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the bulb does not enter pairing mode (no color cycling), turn the light switch off and on five times in quick succession with about one second between each toggle. This forces the bulb into pairing mode. If the Nanoleaf app cannot find the bulb, ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and you are within 15 feet of the bulb. For Thread connectivity issues, check that your Thread border router is powered on and connected to your network. If the bulb becomes unresponsive after setup, power cycle it by turning the switch off for 10 seconds and back on.
