What You'll Need

  • Onvis Motion Sensor SM3 (Matter)
  • Matter-compatible controller (Apple Home, Google Home, etc.)
  • Thread border router (for Thread version) or Wi-Fi
  • Smartphone with controller app
  • CR123A battery (included)

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Unpack the sensor: Remove the sensor from packaging and locate the battery tab.
  2. Activate the battery: Pull the battery insulation tab to activate the pre-installed CR123A battery.
  3. Open Matter controller: Use Apple Home, Google Home, or another Matter-compatible app.
  4. Add device: Tap "+" to add a new accessory.
  5. Scan Matter code: Find the QR code on the sensor or packaging and scan it.
  6. Wait for pairing: The sensor will connect via Thread or Wi-Fi to your smart home.
  7. Assign room: Place the sensor in the appropriate room.
  8. Position the sensor: Mount using the included stand or adhesive. Position 4-7ft high for optimal PIR detection.
  9. Create automations: Set up actions that trigger when motion is detected (e.g., turn on lights).

Key Features

  • Matter-certified
  • PIR motion detection
  • Thread or Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Temperature and humidity sensor
  • Light level sensor
  • Long battery life
  • Works with Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings
  • Compact design

Troubleshooting

  • Sensor not discovered: Ensure battery is inserted correctly. Reset by removing and reinserting battery. Move closer to border router.
  • Motion not detected: Check positioning—PIR sensors detect motion across the field of view, not directly toward. Avoid placing near heat sources.
  • False triggers: Adjust placement away from HVAC vents, direct sunlight, or pet areas if you want to avoid pet detection.
  • Battery draining quickly: High activity areas trigger more reports. Ensure firmware is updated for optimal battery management.
  • Temperature readings inaccurate: Allow sensor to acclimate to room temperature. Avoid placing in direct sunlight.
