What You Will Need
- Philips Hue Filament White A19 Bulb
- A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
- A light fixture with a standard E26 socket (exposed fixtures work best)
- A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
- A Wi-Fi connection on the same network as your Hue Bridge
Step 1: Verify Your Hue Bridge Is Connected
Open the Philips Hue app and confirm your Hue Bridge is online. Like all Hue smart bulbs, the Filament A19 communicates with the Bridge over Zigbee and requires the Bridge to function as a smart bulb. Without a Bridge connection, the bulb will still work as a basic light but you will not have app or voice control.
Step 2: Choose the Right Fixture
The Hue Filament bulb features a vintage-style exposed filament design with an amber glass globe. Unlike standard Hue bulbs with frosted covers, the Filament bulb is intended to be displayed in open or transparent fixtures where the decorative filament is visible. Ideal locations include:
- Pendant lights with clear glass shades
- Edison-style exposed socket fixtures
- Wall sconces with open designs
- Industrial or farmhouse style chandeliers
- Table lamps with no shade or a transparent shade
Step 3: Install the Bulb
- Turn off the fixture at the wall switch.
- Remove any existing bulb from the E26 socket.
- Carefully screw in the Hue Filament A19 bulb. The glass globe is decorative, so handle it gently.
- Turn the wall switch back on.
The bulb will glow with a warm amber tone at 2100K, which is warmer and more golden than a standard Hue White bulb at 2700K. This mimics the look of a traditional vintage Edison bulb.
Step 4: Add the Bulb to the Hue App
- Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
- Tap Add Light and let the app search.
- When the Filament bulb appears, tap to add it to your Bridge.
- Assign the bulb to the appropriate room.
Step 5: Adjust Brightness
The Hue Filament A19 is a dimmable white bulb. It does not support color changes or color temperature adjustment. The color temperature remains fixed at 2100K. However, you have full dimming control from 1% to 100% through the Hue app. The Filament bulb looks especially stunning when dimmed to a low level, creating a warm, candlelit atmosphere.
Step 6: Create Scenes and Automations
Even though the Filament bulb only supports dimming, you can still create useful automations:
- Evening routine: Set the bulb to turn on at sunset at 40% brightness for a cozy ambient glow.
- Bedtime: Gradually dim the bulb to 5% over 30 minutes before turning off completely.
- Welcome home: Use geofencing to turn the bulb on when you arrive home.
- Away mode: Randomly toggle the light to simulate someone being home while you are out.
Tips for the Best Experience
- The Filament bulb produces approximately 550 lumens at full brightness, equivalent to a 40W incandescent bulb. It is designed for ambient lighting, not task lighting.
- For dining rooms or entryways with multiple fixtures, install several Filament bulbs and group them in the Hue app for synchronized dimming.
- Keep the wall switch in the on position and use the Hue app or a Hue Dimmer Switch for daily control.
- The Filament line also comes in Globe (G25) and Edison (ST19) shapes if you want to match different fixture styles while keeping a consistent warm aesthetic.
- Handle the bulb carefully during installation. The clear amber glass is more fragile than the frosted coating on standard Hue bulbs.
