What You Will Need
- Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip (2m)
- A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
- A clean, dry mounting surface
- Rubbing alcohol or surface cleaner
- A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
What Makes the Gradient Lightstrip Different
Unlike the standard Lightstrip Plus, which shows a single color across its entire length, the Gradient Lightstrip can display multiple colors simultaneously. Each section of the strip is independently addressable, allowing you to create flowing gradients and multi-color effects. This makes it especially popular for TV backlighting and accent lighting where a single static color would look flat.
Step 1: Plan Your Installation
Decide where you want to install the Gradient Lightstrip. Popular locations include:
- Behind a TV or monitor for immersive bias lighting
- Along shelving for multi-color accent effects
- Under countertops or along architectural features
- Behind headboards for bedroom ambiance
Measure the surface to make sure the 2-meter length will fit. Unlike the Lightstrip Plus, the Gradient Lightstrip cannot be cut. Plan accordingly to ensure the full strip fits your installation area.
Step 2: Prepare the Surface
Clean the mounting surface thoroughly with rubbing alcohol to remove dust, grease, and residue. The adhesive backing on the Gradient Lightstrip needs a smooth, clean surface for a secure bond. Let the surface dry completely before applying the strip.
Step 3: Connect and Power On
- Connect the lightstrip to the included controller box.
- Plug the power adapter into the controller and then into a wall outlet.
- The strip should light up, confirming a good connection.
Step 4: Mount the Lightstrip
- Starting from the controller end, peel off a small section of the adhesive backing.
- Press the strip firmly onto the surface, working slowly along the length.
- For corners, create smooth curves rather than sharp bends to avoid damaging the LEDs.
- Press along the entire strip to ensure solid adhesion.
Step 5: Pair with Your Hue Bridge
- Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
- Tap Add Light and let the app search for devices.
- The Gradient Lightstrip will appear. Tap to add it.
- Assign it to the appropriate room.
Step 6: Explore Gradient Scenes
This is where the Gradient Lightstrip truly stands out. In the app, navigate to your room and tap Scenes. Gradient-optimized scenes will show multiple colors flowing along the strip simultaneously. Try scenes like:
- Arctic Aurora: Blues, greens, and purples flowing across the strip.
- Savanna Sunset: Warm oranges, reds, and golds transitioning smoothly.
- Galaxy: Deep purples and blues for a cosmic effect.
You can also create custom gradient scenes by setting different colors at different points along the strip.
Step 7: Set Up Entertainment Sync
The Gradient Lightstrip is ideal for Hue Entertainment. Since it can show multiple colors at once, screen-synced content looks far more immersive than with a single-color strip. Go to Settings, then Entertainment Areas, and add the strip. Use the Hue Sync desktop app or the Hue Sync Box to match your screen content in real time.
Tips
- The Gradient Lightstrip cannot be cut or extended. Make sure the 2m length works for your installation before mounting.
- For TV use, the Play Gradient Lightstrip for TV is a better choice since it is specifically shaped to wrap around the back of a television.
- The Gradient Lightstrip requires a Hue Bridge with firmware from 2021 or later. Update your Bridge in the app before setup if needed.
- If mounting behind a TV, use the included clips or cable ties to manage the power cable neatly.
