What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus V4 (2m Base Kit)
  • A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
  • A clean, dry surface for mounting (under cabinets, behind furniture, along shelving)
  • Rubbing alcohol or surface cleaner
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • Scissors (if you need to cut the strip to length)

Step 1: Plan Your Installation

Before peeling off any adhesive backing, plan exactly where the lightstrip will go. The 2m base kit includes the power supply, controller, and a 2-meter LED strip. Measure your intended surface to confirm the strip is long enough, or plan where to cut it if it is too long. Common installation locations include:

  • Under kitchen cabinets for task lighting
  • Behind TV screens or monitors for bias lighting
  • Along shelving or bookcases for accent lighting
  • Under bed frames for a nightlight effect
  • Along staircase handrails for safety lighting

Step 2: Prepare the Mounting Surface

Clean the surface where you plan to attach the lightstrip with rubbing alcohol or a surface cleaner. The adhesive on the back of the strip bonds best to smooth, clean, dry surfaces. Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding. Rough, textured, or dusty surfaces will cause the strip to fall off over time.

Step 3: Cut the Strip to Length (If Needed)

The Lightstrip Plus V4 can be cut at designated cut marks spaced every 33 centimeters along its length. Use sharp scissors to cut precisely at the marked line. Once cut, the remaining piece cannot be reconnected to the base kit. If you need more length, purchase the 1m extension (sold separately) instead of cutting.

Step 4: Connect and Mount the Strip

  1. Connect the lightstrip to the controller by plugging the flat connector into the controller box. It only fits one way.
  2. Plug the power adapter into the controller and connect it to a wall outlet.
  3. The strip should light up, confirming the connection is good.
  4. Starting from the controller end, peel off the adhesive backing gradually and press the strip firmly onto the prepared surface. Work in small sections to keep the strip straight.

Step 5: Add the Lightstrip to Your Bridge

  1. Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
  2. Tap Add Light and let the app search.
  3. The Lightstrip Plus will appear as a single light. Tap to pair it.
  4. Assign it to the appropriate room.

Step 6: Explore Color and Brightness

The Lightstrip Plus V4 supports the full Hue color range plus tunable white temperatures. In the app, try:

  • Under-cabinet lighting: Set to bright cool white (5000K) for kitchen task lighting.
  • TV bias lighting: Choose a soft warm white or light blue to reduce eye strain during viewing.
  • Accent lighting: Use saturated colors to highlight architectural features or create mood lighting.
  • Scenes: Apply preset scenes or create custom ones to match your decor.

Step 7: Set Up Entertainment Sync (Optional)

The Lightstrip Plus supports Hue Entertainment. Add it to an entertainment area in the Hue app and use the Hue Sync desktop app to sync it with your PC or Mac screen content for immersive gaming and movie experiences.

Tips

  • The V4 Lightstrip Plus produces up to 1600 lumens across the full 2m length, making it one of the brightest Hue lightstrips.
  • If the adhesive loses grip over time, use mounting clips or channel diffusers designed for LED strips to secure it.
  • The entire strip displays one color at a time. For multi-color effects along a single strip, consider the Hue Gradient Lightstrip instead.
  • Route the power cable neatly along baseboards or behind furniture using cable clips for a clean installation.
  • Avoid bending the strip at sharp angles, as this can damage the LEDs. Use gentle curves instead.
