Identifying the Issue

If your Nanoleaf Elements Wood Look Hexagons are not connecting or are experiencing sync issues, you may notice the panels failing to join your Wi-Fi network during setup, dropping offline after initial configuration, responding slowly or not at all to app commands, or displaying uneven lighting where some panels appear brighter or dimmer than others. The Elements line uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi through the controller panel, and each panel receives power and data through physical linker connectors. Sync issues may also manifest as panels not following the same scene or animation timing as adjacent panels.

Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi connectivity problems due to weak signal, router changes, or being on a 5GHz network
  • Loose linker connectors between panels disrupting data synchronization
  • The controller panel firmware is outdated or a firmware update failed
  • The router assigned a new IP address to the controller after a reboot
  • Too many devices on the 2.4GHz network causing congestion
  • The power supply is not providing adequate power to all panels in the chain
  • AP isolation or client isolation is enabled on the router, blocking app-to-controller communication

Step-by-Step Fixes

  1. Power cycle the system: Unplug the power supply from the controller for 15 seconds, then reconnect. Allow up to 60 seconds for the controller to reboot and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network. Check the Nanoleaf app to see if the panels come back online.
  2. Check linker connections: If panels are out of sync or individual panels are unresponsive, inspect the linker connectors between panels. Remove and reseat each linker firmly until it clicks. A loose connection can cause data transmission errors that lead to sync problems even if the panel still receives power.
  3. Verify Wi-Fi settings: Confirm your router broadcasts a 2.4GHz network and that the Elements controller is connected to it. The Elements panels do not support 5GHz Wi-Fi. If your router combines both bands under one name, temporarily separate them during setup.
  4. Restart your router: Unplug the router for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Wait for it to fully restart. Router issues are a common cause of IoT device disconnections.
  5. Check for firmware updates: In the Nanoleaf app, navigate to the Elements device settings and check for available firmware updates. Color sync and connectivity improvements are frequently included in updates.
  6. Assign a static IP: Log into your router admin panel and set a DHCP reservation for the Elements controller's MAC address. This prevents the IP address from changing after router restarts, which often causes the "offline" status in the app.
  7. Disable network isolation: Check your router settings for AP isolation, client isolation, or guest network settings that might prevent the Nanoleaf app from communicating with the controller on the local network.
  8. Factory reset: Press and hold the power and action buttons on the controller simultaneously until the LED flashes rapidly. Set up the Elements again as a new device. This is a last resort, as it clears all saved scenes and settings.

When to Contact Support

If the controller does not power on despite a working power supply, or if individual panels remain dark even when directly connected to the controller with a known-good linker, contact Nanoleaf support for warranty replacement. Provide the device model, firmware version, and a description of the sync behavior when reaching out.

Prevention Tips

Set a static IP for the Elements controller in your router to prevent connection drops. Keep the Nanoleaf app and controller firmware updated. Ensure all linker connections are firmly seated during initial installation. If your Wi-Fi is congested with many devices, consider dedicating a separate 2.4GHz SSID for IoT devices to reduce interference. The Elements panels are heavier than standard Shapes due to the wood-grain texture, so use extra adhesive tape or the screw mount option to prevent panels from shifting and loosening linker connections over time.
