Identifying the Issue

When your Govee RGBIC Pro LED Strip Lights stop working, the problem can range from the entire strip not powering on to individual sections displaying incorrect colors, the strip not responding to the app, or parts of the strip going dark. The RGBIC Pro model features individually addressable LEDs with enhanced brightness and color accuracy, and most issues are related to power delivery, connections, or app communication rather than the LEDs themselves.

Common Causes

  • Loose connections: The connection between the LED strip and the controller box can come loose over time, especially if the strip is mounted vertically or in a location where it gets bumped.
  • Insufficient power: If the strip is not getting enough power from the adapter, sections may appear dim or fail to light up. Using a third-party power adapter with the wrong voltage or amperage will cause issues.
  • WiFi or Bluetooth disconnection: If the controller has lost its connection to your network, the strip may still turn on but won't respond to app commands.
  • Damaged strip segments: Physical damage from bending the strip too sharply, pinching it, or exposing it to moisture (if it's not a waterproof model) can cause segments to fail.
  • Outdated firmware: Firmware bugs in the controller can cause color inaccuracies, unresponsive behavior, or connectivity drops.
  • Dimmer switch or smart switch conflict: If the strip's power adapter is plugged into an outlet controlled by a dimmer or smart switch, inconsistent power can cause erratic behavior.

Step-by-Step Fixes

  1. Check all physical connections: Unplug the strip from the controller box and reconnect it firmly. Make sure the power adapter is fully plugged into both the controller and the wall outlet. If using extension cables, verify each connection point is secure.
  2. Use the original power adapter: Confirm you're using the power adapter that came with the strip. Third-party adapters with different voltage or amperage ratings can cause the strip to malfunction.
  3. Power cycle the strip: Unplug the controller from power, wait 15 seconds, then plug it back in. This clears temporary glitches in the controller's processor.
  4. Inspect for physical damage: Run your hand along the strip and check for kinks, sharp bends, or sections that feel different. RGBIC strips should not be bent at angles sharper than 90 degrees. If you find a damaged section, the strip may need to be replaced as RGBIC strips cannot be cut and reconnected like standard RGB strips.
  5. Reconnect via the app: Open the Govee Home app and check if the strip shows as online. If it's offline, tap the device and try reconnecting. If that fails, remove the device from the app and re-add it by tapping + and following the pairing process.
  6. Reset the controller: Press and hold the button on the controller for 8 to 10 seconds until the LED indicator changes pattern, indicating a factory reset. Then re-pair through the Govee Home app.
  7. Update firmware: Once reconnected, go to the device settings in the Govee Home app and install any available firmware updates.
  8. Check the outlet: Make sure the power adapter is plugged into a standard outlet, not one controlled by a dimmer switch or variable power source. Plug it directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip if possible.

When to Contact Support

If the entire strip fails to light up even with confirmed power at the outlet and the original adapter, or if multiple LED segments display incorrect colors or are permanently dark, the strip or controller may have a hardware failure. Contact Govee support through the Govee Home app's Help Center or at govee.com with your model number, photos of the issue if applicable, and a list of the troubleshooting steps you've completed.

Prevention Tips

  • Avoid bending the strip at sharp angles during installation. Use the included corner clips or connectors for turns.
  • Always use the original power adapter and avoid daisy-chaining extensions beyond the manufacturer's recommended length.
  • Mount the controller in a ventilated area to prevent overheating, which can shorten the controller's lifespan.
  • Keep firmware and the Govee Home app updated for stability improvements and bug fixes.
  • If mounting in a kitchen or bathroom, ensure the strip model is rated for moisture exposure.
