What You Will Need

  • Ring Alarm Flood and Freeze Sensor
  • Ring Alarm Base Station (already set up and online)
  • Ring app (iOS or Android) with an active account
  • A location prone to water leaks or freezing temperatures (basement, laundry room, near water heater, etc.)

Step 1: Prepare the Sensor

Remove the Ring Alarm Flood and Freeze Sensor from its packaging. Pull the plastic battery tab to activate the pre-installed batteries. The sensor's LED indicator should flash briefly, confirming it has power.

Step 2: Add the Sensor in the Ring App

  1. Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
  2. Select Security Devices, then choose Flood and Freeze Sensor.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts. The app will instruct you to press the small pairing button on the back of the sensor.
  4. Wait for the app to discover the sensor via your Ring Alarm Base Station's Z-Wave radio. This typically takes 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Once discovered, name the sensor and assign it to a room (e.g., "Basement" or "Laundry Room").

Step 3: Place the Sensor

The Flood and Freeze Sensor is designed to sit directly on the floor in areas where water leaks or freezing temperatures are a concern. Place it in one of these recommended locations:

  • Near a water heater or hot water tank
  • Behind a washing machine
  • Under a kitchen or bathroom sink
  • In a basement near a sump pump
  • Near pipes that may freeze in winter

Ensure the two metal contact probes on the bottom of the sensor are touching the floor surface. These probes detect the presence of water. The sensor also has a built-in thermometer that triggers alerts when the ambient temperature drops to 41 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) or below.

Step 4: Test the Sensor

  1. In the Ring app, navigate to Devices and select your Flood and Freeze Sensor.
  2. Check that the device shows as Online and the signal strength is adequate.
  3. To test flood detection, place a small amount of water on a flat surface and set the sensor probes in it. You should receive a notification within seconds.
  4. Dry the sensor thoroughly after testing.

Step 5: Configure Notifications

By default, the sensor will send push notifications to your phone whenever it detects water or a freeze condition. You can customize these settings in the Ring app:

  • Tap the sensor in Devices, then select the gear icon.
  • Adjust notification preferences for flood and freeze alerts independently.
  • If you have a Ring Protect Pro plan, the sensor can also trigger 24/7 professional monitoring alerts.

Tips for Best Performance

  • Keep the sensor within 250 feet of your Ring Alarm Base Station for reliable Z-Wave connectivity. Walls and floors reduce this range.
  • If the signal is weak, consider adding a Ring Alarm Range Extender between the base station and the sensor.
  • Replace the batteries when the Ring app alerts you to low battery. The sensor uses two CR123A lithium batteries and typically lasts about three years.
  • Periodically clean the metal probes on the bottom of the sensor to ensure reliable water detection.
