Overview
The Ring Alarm Security Kit provides everything you need to start a whole-home security system. The kit comes with five devices that work together: the Base Station acts as the central hub, the Keypad lets you arm and disarm the system, the Contact Sensor monitors a door or window, the Motion Detector watches for movement in a room, and the Range Extender boosts Z-Wave range to distant sensors.
Step 1: Set Up the Base Station
- Place the Base Station in a central location in your home, near your WiFi router.
- Connect the included Ethernet cable from your router to the Base Station.
- Plug in the power adapter. The LED ring on the Base Station will begin flashing.
- Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
- Select Security Devices, then Base Station.
- Scan the QR code on the bottom of the Base Station and follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to your WiFi network.
- Wait for the LED ring to turn solid, indicating the Base Station is online and ready.
Step 2: Add the Keypad
- In the Ring app, tap Set Up a Device, then select Keypad.
- Plug in the Keypad using the included power adapter and USB cable.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to pair it with the Base Station via Z-Wave.
- Set a security access code when prompted. This code is used to arm and disarm the system from the Keypad.
- Place the Keypad near your most-used entry door so you can quickly disarm the system when arriving home. It can sit on a surface or be wall-mounted using the included bracket.
Step 3: Add the Contact Sensor
- In the Ring app, tap Set Up a Device, then select Contact Sensor.
- Pull the battery tab on the sensor to activate it.
- Press the pairing button when prompted.
- Once paired, install the sensor on your primary entry door. Mount the sensor body on the door frame and the magnet on the door itself, within one inch of each other when the door is closed.
- Use the included adhesive strips or screws to mount both pieces.
Step 4: Add the Motion Detector
- In the Ring app, tap Set Up a Device, then select Motion Detector.
- Pull the battery tab and press the pairing button.
- Mount the motion detector in a main living area or hallway at approximately seven feet above the floor, ideally in a corner for the widest coverage.
- Position it so that movement crosses the sensor's field of view rather than approaching directly toward it.
Step 5: Add the Range Extender
- In the Ring app, tap Set Up a Device, then select Range Extender.
- Plug the Range Extender into an outlet between the Base Station and your most distant sensor.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to pair it.
- The Range Extender will automatically relay Z-Wave signals, extending the reach of your alarm system.
Step 6: Configure Your Alarm System
- Alarm Modes — Set up Home, Away, and Disarmed modes. In Away mode, all sensors are active. In Home mode, you may want to disable the motion detector while keeping door sensors active.
- Entry and Exit Delays — Configure delay timers so you have time to enter or leave without triggering the alarm.
- Notifications — Customize which events trigger push notifications.
- Professional Monitoring — With Ring Protect Pro, enable 24/7 monitoring by a professional security center.
Tips for Expanding Your System
- Add contact sensors to all exterior doors and ground-floor windows for comprehensive perimeter security.
- Add motion detectors to hallways and large rooms for interior coverage.
- Consider adding a Ring Alarm Outdoor Siren for a visible and audible deterrent.
- Link Ring cameras and doorbells to your alarm system for integrated security with video verification.
- The Base Station includes a 24-hour backup battery so your system stays active during power outages.
