What You Will Need
- Ring Indoor Cam (2nd Gen)
- Ring app (iOS or Android) with an active account
- A 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi network
- A nearby power outlet (the camera is plug-in only)
- USB-C power cable and adapter (included)
Step 1: Choose a Location
Select an indoor location where you want to monitor activity. Common placements include living rooms, nurseries, home offices, and entryways. The Ring Indoor Cam (2nd Gen) features a manual privacy cover that you can slide over the lens when you do not want the camera to record, making it ideal for shared living spaces.
Place the camera on a flat surface like a shelf or table, or mount it on a wall using the included mounting bracket. Position it at a height that provides a clear view of the area you want to monitor.
Step 2: Plug In the Camera
- Connect the included USB-C cable to the port on the back of the camera.
- Plug the other end into the included power adapter and connect it to a wall outlet.
- The camera's LED light will begin flashing, indicating it is powered on and ready for setup.
Step 3: Set Up in the Ring App
- Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
- Select Cameras, then choose Indoor Cam (2nd Gen).
- Scan the QR code on the bottom of the camera or on the Quick Start Guide.
- Press the setup button on the camera when prompted. The LED will flash blue, indicating it is in pairing mode.
- Connect to the camera's temporary WiFi network when your phone prompts you.
- Select your home WiFi network and enter the password. The 2nd Gen Indoor Cam supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
- Wait for the connection to complete, then name your camera and assign it to a room.
Step 4: Configure Motion Detection
- In the Ring app, select your Indoor Cam and tap Motion Settings.
- Set up Motion Zones to focus detection on specific areas of the camera's field of view. This helps avoid false alerts from things like ceiling fans or flickering screens.
- Adjust the Motion Sensitivity slider to suit your needs.
- Enable or disable Motion Alerts based on your preference.
Step 5: Set Up Privacy Features
The 2nd Gen Indoor Cam includes enhanced privacy controls:
- Physical Privacy Cover — Slide the cover over the lens to completely block the camera. When closed, audio and video recording are disabled.
- Motion Scheduling — Create a schedule to automatically disable motion detection during specific times.
- Modes — Use the Ring app's mode settings (Home, Away, Disarmed) to control when the camera is active.
Tips for Best Performance
- The camera records in 1080p HD with color night vision and a wide-angle lens for comprehensive coverage.
- Place the camera three to five feet above the floor for the best field of view in a typical room.
- A Ring Protect subscription is required to save video recordings. Without it, you can view live video and receive motion alerts but cannot review past footage.
- The camera supports two-way audio, allowing you to listen and speak through the app. Use this feature to check in on pets or communicate with family members.
