What You Will Need

  • Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor (2024 model)
  • SmartThings Hub v3 or a compatible SmartThings hub (already set up and online)
  • SmartThings app (iOS or Android) with a Samsung account
  • CR2450 battery (pre-installed)
  • Adhesive strip or mounting screws (included)

Step 1: Prepare the Motion Sensor

  1. Remove the SmartThings Motion Sensor from its packaging.
  2. Pull the plastic battery tab to activate the pre-installed CR2450 battery.
  3. The LED on the sensor will flash briefly, indicating it is powered on and ready to pair.

Step 2: Add the Sensor in the SmartThings App

  1. Open the SmartThings app and tap the + icon, then select Add Device.
  2. Tap SmartThings or Samsung, then select Motion Sensor.
  3. Select your SmartThings Hub as the connecting hub.
  4. The hub will enter Zigbee pairing mode and scan for the sensor. The 2024 model uses Zigbee for reliable, low-power communication.
  5. If the sensor is not found within 60 seconds, use a pin to press the reset button on the sensor to force pairing mode.
  6. Once discovered, name the sensor and assign it to a room (e.g., "Front Hall," "Office," "Garage").

Step 3: Choose a Placement Location

The 2024 SmartThings Motion Sensor uses a passive infrared (PIR) sensor to detect body heat movement. For the most accurate detection:

  • Mount it at a height of approximately seven to eight feet in a corner for the widest field of view.
  • Aim the sensor so people walk across its detection field rather than directly toward it.
  • Avoid placing it near heat sources (radiators, vents, stoves) or in direct sunlight, which can cause false triggers.
  • Avoid areas with strong air drafts from HVAC systems.

Step 4: Mount the Sensor

  • Adhesive mount — Peel the backing and press the sensor firmly against the wall. Hold for 30 seconds. Ideal for smooth surfaces and renters.
  • Screw mount — Use the included screws and bracket for a permanent installation on drywall, wood, or other surfaces.
  • Shelf placement — The sensor can also sit on a flat surface like a bookshelf or mantle if wall mounting is not preferred.

Step 5: Create Automations

The motion sensor becomes truly powerful when combined with automations in the SmartThings app:

  • Motion-activated lights — Turn on lights in a room when motion is detected and turn them off after a period of no activity. Go to Automations, create a new routine, and set the motion sensor as the trigger.
  • Security alerts — Use SmartThings Home Monitor to receive intrusion alerts when motion is detected while the system is in Armed mode.
  • Presence-based control — Turn off devices in a room when no motion has been detected for a set period (e.g., 15 minutes), saving energy.
  • Welcome home routine — When motion is detected at the front hall sensor, turn on the entryway light, adjust the thermostat, and unlock the door.

Step 6: Test the Sensor

  1. In the SmartThings app, select the motion sensor and watch its status display.
  2. Walk in front of the sensor and confirm the status changes to Motion Detected.
  3. Move away and wait for the status to return to No Motion (this may take 30 to 60 seconds).
  4. Test your automations to verify lights turn on, notifications are sent, or other actions trigger correctly.

Tips for Best Performance

  • Battery life is approximately two to three years with the CR2450 battery.
  • The sensor has a detection range of approximately 15 to 20 feet with a wide field of view.
  • The 2024 model features improved response time and battery efficiency compared to earlier generations.
  • The sensor also reports ambient temperature, which you can use in climate control automations.
  • Place the sensor within Zigbee range of your hub. SmartThings smart plugs act as Zigbee repeaters and can extend the network's reach.
